Your current Mailplane 1.x license is valid for all 2.x updates, too. Many many thanks for the beta testing, the numerous bug reports, and the interesting feature requests. Mailplane 2.0 would not have been possible without your help, ideas, and involvement."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/at/auto/1228964037.usr18053.jpg" style="border: 1px solid #d2d2bb;" /></p><p>If I erased my Mac's HD tomorrow, the first app to make its way back on it would be Mailplane. I've been using it since before it was officially in version 1, and I can't imagine life without it. While you could easily get a lot of functionality from the web-based version of G-Mail, the ease with which Mailplane handles attachments, iPhoto photos, multiple accounts, and the fact that it provides Growl notifications make it a must install for those who are major power users of G-Mail.</p>

Forgive my cluelessness, but what advantages does this bring over simply accessing Gmail from Mail? Is it just a legacy thing from the time before Gmail supported IMAP? I have multiple mail accounts, so I kind of like having access to all of them via one interface on both my Mac and my iPhone.

I think it's more about people like me who prefer the G-Mail interface to a mail client interface. I use IMAP on my iPhone because the IMAP experience is better than the mobile experience, but on my desktop, I'm all about Mailplane. For me, I just work much more quickly with the G-Mail UI than any client I've ever used.

I get much of the same functionality using Thunderbird and IMAP, including Growl support, but this still looks pretty neat. I used to use the GMail interface exclusively. It was just easier with multiple accounts to use Thunderbird. It'd be a real pain to switch now, though, as I have all my filters set up in Thunderbird.
