Well this new contest from HP that we've been invited to partake in dwarfs that one on a number of levels. First, the prize pack is even bigger: $6000 in total prizes, consisting of one desktop PC, three laptops, a Media Center extender, a printer, and some software and accessories. Whew! There's some awesome hardware here. The scope is bigger too: there are 50 different blogs involved, and they range from tech blogs like this one, to women's blogs, to student blogs, to Spanish and Portuguese blogs. The complete list is further on in this post. If you do the math, that's $300,000 USD in total prizes, thanks to HP and Microsoft's Windows Live team.

The HP Magic Giveaway is designed around the idea of the magic of sharing, so it's not a coincidence that it's happening as we lead up to the Christmas & holiday season. Each blog is running their own type of contest (and you can enter all of them), but the idea that many of us are focusing on is sharing. One person probably doesn't need four computers all to themselves, so when I kick off my contest later on, it will include some sort of prize-sharing element. Start thinking of who and how you'd share this with others. A contest like this is even more timely when you look around at the financial markets world-wide, and even in your neighbourhood. Stay tuned for more details on my contest.

So what's included in this huge giveaway? That is one family sized prize package. It's enough to replace every PC for a whole family.

It seems the 31 days of dragon was successful enough to warrant this giveaway! I hope this means that HP is considering more giveaways later on down the road as well!

Too much of a hassle to have a contest. It's a busy time of the year. I'll take it all off your hands so you can concentrate on more important stuff. :)

Yes, unless otherwise noted by individual contests (which I doubt), this is a world-wide contest. :D

One of the better aspects of trying to stay near the leading edge of technology is that you generally have some nice, still-working, only slightly aged tech to give away to friends and family. This contest makes it even better because it's all-new stuff.

There are two folks at church who don't have a computer at all, but would like to get our e-mail and web-based updates. I've been looking for ways to build really inexpensive net-boxes for them, but the price is still a bit high. This could solve that problem nicely.

My only question is "Why aren't there any PPCs in the pack?"

Sharing Suggestion:

Winner of the "Prize pool" on this site gets to pick one, and only one of the computers. Each of the other individual prizes are then awarded to other entries on this site.

Share the wealth :)

WOW, what are rules? How do I sign up? I've played around with the touch screen systems at Circuit City and wish they would have had a Quad in it, I might have been persuaded to grab one. I'm waiting on one of my systms to die so I have an excuse to spend that much on one, but here's hoping I can sign up and win one!!!

Thanks for all the great sites!! Happy Holidays!

WOW, what are rules? How do I sign up?

Each of the 50 participating sites will be posting their own rules and sign up procedures. As of yesterday, three sites have already started their contests (with three more each day, I believe) so time to get busy!

I would like to keep this a secret to where & whom i will be sharing my prize. It would have been better if we could participate by sending an Email so that we can keep it as a secret.Sorry but i don't want to take any credit & don't want to make any publicity about it.Thanks for understanding Jason. :)

I don't get it!

All I see is links to HP Product Placement Page referring back to blogs. It's confusing if each blogger is giving away a system or if there is only one system.

No information how to enter.

Must have been designed by the Windows Vista promotion team.

This is awesome, and, yes, there's one of these packages for EACH of the 50 participating blogs. The dates are staggered among the blogs, and each blog has at least some leeway in setting how they'll do this, so there's not a "standard" set of rules across all 50 blogs. Digital Home Thoughts portion will run Dec 12- Dec 18

And yes, it's worldwide.

Here;s the master site: http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/blogger-magic/

This is a AWESOME giveaway package from HP and Digital Home Thoughts. But I can't seem to find the rules posted so I would have to guess it hasnt started on this blog yet!

I know I'd love to win. I need a new notebook forsure! I've had to replace 3 motherboards in my notebook in the past 2 years, not to mention the screen and the DVD drive. So I'd have to keep one notebook for myself.

All the other notebooks and stuff to would make great surprise holiday gifts this years.

Keep me posted as to when your giveaway begins, I'm ready, willing and able to get started for whatever it takes to get a chance to win!

It is interesting to realize that we're moving into a whole new development phase of the social networking "tsunami" forming on the Internet. I know, Corporate America has been "aware" of bloggers, increasingly, as has Political America... But what we're starting to see is an honest appraisal of just how many eyeballs the bloggers and forums are able to boast -- and commercial expansion into the Public Relations aspect of sponsoring flashy promotions, which incidentally get a lot of decent publicity out there into the very category of active consumers that most companies only DREAM of being able to target so tightly!!

SO -- it is going to be VERY interesting to see just how THIS particular promotion plays out... If you think about it, this is still somewhat of a trial run, to see just how to get the most "bang for their buck" -- which means that each of the 50 different blogs "gifted" with this set of prizes, each with their slightly different approach to generating an enthusiastic response, is providing a research test-bed to help figure out "do's and don'ts".

Some of the blogs are using this opportunity to improve THEIR network standing, by requiring multiple layers of external linkages back, and DIGG and Twitter and Facebook and etc etc links. As far as I've seen the only externally imposed constraint appears to involve "sharing the wealth", finding some socially conscious aspect as improving the odds for any given contestant.

Have to give good odds we're going to see a few more promotions like this, at least until consensus is reached about whether this is more cost effective (cost versus eyeballs) than Superbowl commercials, eh?

Yeah, I know it's a bit confusing - if HP had updated their links to our posts about the contests, it would make a bit more sense...but there's nothing to enter here yet. Our contest starts on the 12th. Each blogger is giving away a $6000 prize pack, hence my explanation of over $300K in prizes.

Back in April a tree fell on our house (http://polypaisley.blogspot.com/2008/10/whew.html). I was at work but the rest of the Tribe was home –animals too- and spent several hours trying to sort it out. I felt like a sideliner because I didn’t even know until I rolled in around 4 am.
In our time of need, our neighbor gave us roof. She’s an elderly lady with a small trailer but she made room for us.
We got back in our house a little over a month later and YAY we’re still friends with that dear neighbor –I know living together can destroy the most idyllic conditions, but we made it!
I mention this to explain what’s happened recently. Diva befriended the parents of one of my daughter’s many exes. They’re from out of state and had no transportation, so Diva runs Ms. W around while Mr. J bikes to work @ Wal-Mart (it’s not uncommon down here, really). They have 2 sons in-house (16/14), 2 ankle-biter dogs & a ferret.
I took W with me & the Herd to the town Christmas parade this Saturday past and we had a great time. Sunday at work Diva texts me: They’re being evicted.

Shock? Certainly. W talks to Diva about everything. No mention of pending homelessness had come up.
I don’t know the owner’s reasoning or anything, and I will refrain from expressing my uncomplimentary opinion (mostly), but my first reaction was: Are they staying in our living room or the spare room at your Dad’s?
There was nothing to consider. Of course we would help them. They didn’t ask, and probably wouldn’t have, but we can’t allow them to be on the street, knowing we could have helped.
So, yeah, we got 4 extra peeps under this shrinking (newly replaced!) roof, but we’re getting along. They’ve already been scoping for new digs & Diva is assisting them with filing formal complaints against the owner (snarl).

The eldest of their boys has had some trouble, as teens are wont to. His is getting frightening for his mother so Diva and me have slipped a lil unconventional (pagan/hippie/goth style) wisdom into the cracks in his armor. I hope its working. We have a boy his age & I’d be beside myself if Ben was getting into the things this kid thinks are funny (refraining…).
The other kid is quieter, studious & hangs under his mom. Both are interested in computers and technology.

Drooling over all the gear being offered by Hewlett Packard in their HP Magic GiveAway (http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/blogger-magic/) got me thinking. I’ve got a few thrown together systems here. We have Ben, at 16 in high school, who really does need his own computer. Tweety has a lil laptop we managed to snag for cheap, & KJ & Steelio would be thrilled with that PC. Gryff is almost as puter-geeky as me...a laptop would put a shine on his face that would eclipse the sun.

So I very quietly waited for word of the opening, and it happened to come just after all this went down with W, J, and their boys.

So I began rethinking. We have systems, albeit thrown together. The boys share a computer and W & J share. W is a mature lady and not overly comfy with technology. She’s trying, even let Diva convince her to take a puter course @ the local library. Her health is up & down though, so she misses a lot.

If she had a laptop…Diva and me could help her out at home, or even here at our homestead. She’s getting into digital photography, and her younger boy takes homeschooling courses online.

This is too much gear to keep it all, I mean really. Even if we didn’t have the W & J sitch, Diva’s pop has been puterless for months & Ben really does need. I have a brother going to Iraq this month. I would love to set him up to make sure we keep in touch. His twin sister in Texas is without a computer & wants to continue her education…

The possibilities are truly endless.

It’s been my observation that there is no coincidence. There are reasons under reasons why things happen, why certain people are in some places at certain times.

We as a people have lost that *my brother’s keeper* mentality. We aren’t villagers closing the gates at sunset to keep the Boogie Man away from our sheep, our kids, our homes. We have shut ourselves off from each other. We cannot make this trip alone. We have to reach out to each other, even if that reach is denied, the attempt, the offer –and the sincere desire to give and help- is what matters.

If I won the HP Magic Give Away, I would give away all but a system each for my son & Gryffin, and the printer. The rest, we have no need for. And we have more than enough people around us who do need.

I'm heading to bed now, so it will be tomorrow morning when I do the drawing. I'll be posting the winner in this thread, and on the front page.
