What are they going to do, start charging for the upgrades? It doesn't seem to make much sense to pull them outright.

It didn't make much sense to me, either. But I guess in times of shrinking revenue, you try to generate it anywhere you can. If that means making you pay for an upgrade or reducing bandwidth costs by not offering a download at all, then I guess it looks good to the bean counters. Just guessing.

It may be the end of the contract with MS. I know with a lot of licenses, they are time limited, so maybe HTC only had the right to offer WM6 upgrades through 10/31/2008, or maybe only the right to do so for free. 6.0 has been out over a year now. If you have WM5 and haven't upgraded yet, I doubt you will in the next few months or year.

Good point. I hadn't thought about that. And you're right, if you haven't upgraded from WM5 yet, I doubt you will. (And if you were thinking about it and holding off for whatever reason, chances are you've already downloaded it and put it away somewhere for that late night, when you're all alone and have had a few drinks and then decide to do something wild and crazy, like update your ROM. At least that's how it used to be for me.

I DO have WM5 and I want to upgrade, but I have a Cingular 3125 (HTC Startrek or STAR100) and I can't find a WM6 or 6.1 upgrade. Does anyone know if one exists? There's no sign of it on HTC's site. :(

Try over at XDA Developers

I've been running WM6.1 on my 8125 for ages now.
Just be careful and read the faqs and wikis before you do.

AWESOME! I have not tried it yet, but this is fantastic. I want to read a bit and make sure I do all the steps, I can't afford to brick my phone. This is great though, and I really do appreciate the info.

As an owner of two of their products, TyTN II and Touch it would be nice if they would explain why this is happening. I have installed WM6 on my TyTNII, but they should keep in better contact with their customers. I have registered my products but they have not made any contact, oh well that is why I visit this forum. Thanks Ed.

The TyTN II came with Wm6 on it, not WM5, so it is not part of this issue. It will be in some number of months when HTC pulls the free WM6.1 upgrade though.

Yep, I believe that's it. Palm is in the same boat; the WM6 upgrade (http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/treo750update/att.html) for the Treo 750 expires on the 31st.
