Smartphone Suicide by Vibration?

That's the way it looked when I came into my office yesterday morning and saw it laying there. I was completely puzzled because I knew I hadn't dropped it. The phone was no worse for wear, so I put it back up under my monitor where I normally keep it. A few minutes later, my smartphone fired off a notification, where it the proceeded to vibrate itself off my monitor stand and onto my desk. Aha! So that's what happened - over night it must have vibrated its way off my desk and onto the floor. Does that seem screwy to anybody else? No phone should have a vibration mode so powerful that it moves the phone across a desk and onto the floor. Needless to say, I've change my normal profile from vibration+sound to be just sound.</p>

On the other hand, most phones don't vibrate strong enough. If the BJ is stronger, that's an advantage, e.g., if you're walking. I would assume putting it on something padded would make it stop moving.

I have a couple of blocks of foam from a Pelican case that I keep on my desk and by my bed for that very purpose. They not only quiet the noise of vibration, they keep the phone from moving.

About three days ago I put my iphone on the window ledge of the bathroom. While I was showering my iphone vibrated itself right off the ledge onto our glass bathroom scale. I heard a loud crash and knew immediately what happened. It's the four time in about three weeks I've dropped the darn thing and not a scratch on it. I don't leave it up high when I know it's gonna vibrate.

Be greatful that your phone vibrates so well.

I returned phones (Touch Dual for one) which didn't vibrate enough so that I would feel it in my pocket.

Also, I would gladly trade battery performace for a phone which had a boost on it's vibrate mode.

PS. I too have the Blackjack II and mine doesn't vibrate off the desk. Which setting do you have it set to?

that may be why some of the pre-diamond htc phones had the rubberized paint, the older touches and the T-Mobile Wing for example

I had it set to "Vibrate and sound" on alarms and for notifications.

I agree. My Q9m has a pretty good vibration. Sometimes when I'm driving, I can feel it vibrate on my hip even though I can't near the notification go off (and my Q9m's volume is also at maximum).

Moral: Don't put your phone where it can fall if it's on vibrate. Maybe new phones could include orientation sensors so they wouldn't vibrate if placed face-up or face-down. I know the Touch Diamond will stop ringing if you turn it over, so it's probably easy to do.

My previous phone, an iPaq 6945, could shake the house when it vibrated. I haven't seen my new BJ II vibrate like that yet.
