View Full Version : Celebrate the Canadian Launch of the Zune: Win a Customized Zune 4

Today is June 13th, and that's the official day the Zune launches in Canada. So it's contest time! The fine folks on Microsoft Canada's Zune team sent me a black Zune 4 with one of the new Zune Originals designs on the back (pictured below) - a Meomi design called "Percussion". Meomi is the talented duo of Vicki Wong (based out of Vancouver) and Michael Murphy (based out of Los Angeles). OK, so that's half Canadian. No matter, the artwork rocks!

So how can you win this Zune? First off, because this contest is to celebrate the launch of the Zune in Canada, I'm going to limit this contest to Canadians living in Canada (none of that "I'm living abroad" or "I was born in Canada" stuff). I'm not going to check passports, but the shipping address must be a Canadian address. Yeah, I don't normally limit contests, but as the Zune launches in new markets I'm going to try my best to get a Zune from the respective Microsoft team in that local market and we'll repeat this process for the residents of that country.

The rules are simple: post a message to this discussion thread telling me a song you like by a Canadian artist (look at me honouring CANCON!). It can be any song, any genre, but it must be by a Canadian artist (or an artist generally acknowledged to be Canadian even if they live outside Canada today). One post per person allowed, and the winner will be picked randomly from all the entries. If it's your first post to our forums, it might not appear right away - please allow 24 hours for your post to appear. The contest will run for seven days, ending on June the 20th at 10 AM (GMT -7).

Woohoo! First post! GO CANADA GO! About time.

First artist, probably one of the most underrated Canadian artist who just emerged with his first solo album last year.

Justin Nozuka - Save Him (from the album Holly). I recommend everyone to listen to him.

Hey Jason! I'm absolutely loving it that the Zune is finally here! Anyway, it's also awesome that you're giving away a brand new Zune too!

My favorite Canadian artist has gotta be none other than Michael Buble (he hails from Halifax). He is a jazz crooner who does beautiful remakes of old songs and creates new ones that are gems to my ears. I wish he'd tour in this part of the Altlantic Canada.

Well, there you have it! Cheers mate!

Just bought (on CD too!) Ivana Santilli's new album TO.NY and I'm loving it. I'm not usually a pop guy, but this album is earworming its way into my brain cells. The first single Whateva U Want is especially catchy.
I'm definitely catching her performance at Revival next Friday.
Yay Zune in Canada, finally!!!! This player deserves much respect.

Because I am montrealer, I would say "Wake up" from Arcade Fire. I like all the songs from their first CD.

Thanks for the opportunity.

I'll go with "Horsefish" from Amon Tobin's latest album, "Foley Room". His wiki page mentions that he is a "Montreal-based Brazilian musician". Does this fill the canadian requirement?

Just to be on the safe side, I'll mention another one... The song "Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls" from the band "Godspeed You! Black Emperor". Some of the musicians are canadian. That one has got to count for sure!

Thanks and good luck everyone,

Antoine

There is only one song that transcends the music industry in Canada. The Hockey Song by Stompin Tom Conners

I'm so glad to see the Zune in Canada.

Well my song would have to be 38 years old by the Tragically Hip.

But in light of the recent events with CBC and CTV, The Hockey Night in Canada Theme song by Dolores Claman. It just wont be the same on saturday nights...

Cool!

One canadian artist I love is Rush with their song Closer to the Heart!

Finally...the Zune has come to Canada.
As for the song by a Canadian artist, I gotta go with The Halcyon Days by The Tea Party.

I hope a newbie here has as much chance to win as a forum vet!

Anyways, I too am thrilled the not-iPod is finally available (legitimately!) in Canada. I had a 1st gen Zune (brown, of course!) and used it almost every day until my wife dropped it in a coffee mug. :( Doesn't seem to hold a charge very well anymore...

So I've been waiting for a chance to get a new one, and I'd love to save myself the dough!

I'm a big fan of Cancon. My collection is full of albums by Alanis Morissette, Arcade Fire, Barenaked Ladies, Bedouin Soundclash... but I'm gonna put my fav up as Our Lady Peace -- Innocent.

Have to go with "Love Don't Live Here Anymore", a Madonna cover performed by City and Colour and Jully Black at NXNE in 2005.

It's a pretty obscure example, but it features two Canadian artists. :) If you can track down a copy of this recording, it's well worth the time spent.

Hey, Jason, another newbie here!

Very excited that the Zune is coming to Canada! I pretty much check the site every day for any glimpses of news for Canadians, and all your other posts are always interesting and helpful.

Anyway, my choice is The Barenaked Ladies, It's All Been Done.

I'm not Canadian so please don't enter me into the competition.

But I would like to say that there's a lot of Canadian artists that I love, especially A Silver. Mt Zion and The Arcade Fire. Oh, and William Shatner of course. :)

;)Please include me in your contest. Awesome prize.

So many songs to pick however, one in particular has a lot of meaning for me so I'm going with that one

Ann Murray - "You Needed Me"

It's not my fave Canadian tune of all time (that would be any one of about thirty different Lennie Cohens), but a really cool Toronto-themed song is "History Remade" by the Fembots. I love the opening line -- "Here's where the rioters raged over baseball and race."

All these posts and no mention of The Barenaked Ladies. Truthfully quite surprised to be the first! Perhaps I'm dreaming, maybe someone should Pinch Me (sorry.. I had to).

Loco Locass - M'accrocher

A song about suicide and our youth and from a movie on the same subject.
The movie is called "Tout est parfait" (Everything is perfect).

I really love Naveed by Our Lady Peace. It brings back fond memories of my first concert... I was about 13 years old and I saw OLP and Everclear perform at The Maple Leaf Gardens. I had nosebleed seats and the strobe lights kind of blinded me but it was a great time. I remember listening to Naveed at the show and rocking out :D

I always get a flashback to grade six when I hear Armageddon by Prism. I still get a little adrenaline rush when they scramble all the F-16s.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Justin Rutledge does an amazing version of "Sweet Jane" that even blows the Cowboy Junkies version away. Even if I don't get the Zune, spread the word, visit his website (self-titled, so I wont take a chance on posting the link);)

Welcome Zune to Canada!

Canadian song: Sleep in late by Big Sugar. I discovered the band when I saw them open for another band. Gordie Johnson blew me away.

Their debut album, Big Sugar, is still one of my favourites. Too bad they broke up later (I think Gordie ended up in Texas!).
