Seeing as how Apple has set its sights on RIM as a target to shoot for, it is time for Microsoft to buy RIM. Forget yahoo, Microsoft needs to swallow up RIm and take on Apple directly.
By doing this they could integrate Blackberries directly into exchange without the need for the BES which is an unnecessary piece of middleware. This would be a big win in the corporate market as the IT shops could throw away BES and integrate directly to Exchange the way all of us with WM devices do today.
There are also a lot of good pieces of WM that could be shoved under the hood of BOS. Keep the UI that everyone likes, but use the WM kernel and bring thousands of WM apps to that platform. Only RIM has a cult like following like Apple, and this is the only way Microsoft can protect the Exchange homeland.
This would also buy them some instant cred with the carriers because RIM hold the upper hand in bargaining with carriers. Carriers want Blackberries, not the other way around. Microsoft could the make the same demands that Apple has made in the past. The difference is Microsoft would be exposed to all carriers, unlike the Apple/ATT tie in.
RIM also has better traction with the consumer/SOHO market. This is something they do not have with the WM devices today. By getting RIM Microsoft could compete with Apple on both fronts.
