You can find a lot of info about unlocking phones and such at xda-developers (http://www.xda-developers.com) forums. Make sure you search before you post as there is not always a lot of tolerance for questions that have been asked and answered several times. :) Other things to do:

Get a good memory manager program (Tapping the X only minimizes a program). I use iLauncher (http://www.sbsh.net), but there are many others, including freeware like Magic Button.
I am partial to phone profile programs. Again I like PhoneWeaver from SBSH (same as iLauncher), but there are lots of other ones as well.
Ditch the lame File Explorer and get either Resco Explorer (http://www.resco.net)(payware) or Total Commander (freeware)
Get a good program for maintaining your device (clearing junk files and such). I have both Memmaid (http://www.dinarsoft.com)and SK Tools (http://www.s-k-tools.com)(some overlap for sure!) and there are others.
Do a few searches here; there are a few older threads on favorite software.
