Not quite sure where to post this as I'm still finding my way around.
Google published a preview of "Friend Connect (http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/annc/20080512_friend_connect.html)" this Monday. With this service
web Administrators can easely add social-network functions to their site.
Friend Connect works together with Openid, Opensocial and Oauth.
An owner of a website who would like to add some social feats to their site only needs to add a small piece of code to add functions such as Users, Invitations, a Member Gallery and the ability to post messages to each other.
Besides the functions Google provides, it's possible to use third-party applications. One example of that is Opensocial-api. (http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial)
With Friend Connect a network of friends can be built, but there can also be made contact with friends on Facebook, Orkut, Plaxo and Google Talk through a secured connection.
This preview was officially launched on the Google Campfire-One (http://code.google.com/campfire/) event, a meeting that Google organizes for developers to show off their latest gadgets and to gain feedback from.
The website of musician Ingrid Michaelson (http://www.ingridmichaelson.com) will be the first to use Friend Connect. Via the Google-service visitors of the website of Michaelson will be alble to use the network of iLike, a site where people can get in touch with eachother through music. They can view comments, add music to their profile and see if any of their friends are going to a Concert.
The service, in it's current stage, is limited to a handful of selected websites.
Those who are interested can sign up (http://www.google.com/friendconnect) on the Connect website. For a period of time more and more sites will be able to use the service, new functions will be added and the feedback of the betatesters will be sorted through.
This is my first article -ever- so I hope everything made sense!
