Carry on.

For the sake of many, I sure hope that what's sitting on Sony Ericsson's own web site (http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/common/handyinfo?cc=us&lc=en&sortorder=0) is outdated or a typo. It looks suspiciously like the announcment date was simply copied and the year updated by one.

Who would announce a phone exactly one year in advance of release? Especially one that has physical units available for people to look at and touch right now, and which is being featured as a flagship product at two key technology events within weeks of each other.

My money is on that date being nothing more than a placeholder, on a page that none of us are supposed to see.

I predicted this a week ago in a discussion with a friend of mine. Supposed functionality (sliding commands a la Apple) will be implemented in WM 7 and is currently not available in WM6. So either

a) SE will cobble together something atop of current interface, in which case it will either be clumsy and/or slow,

b) SE will wait until the release of WM7 (hence the delay).

My bet would be on (b).
Just my $ 0.02

Cheers,
Rok

I don't know what you guys think, but IMHO this was a VERY bad move from S-E. I, dfor example, don't need a funky front-end. If I need one and S-E doesn't deliver it, I just install the forthcoming Spb Mobile Shell 2 and that's all. (Not that I'd need it: without proper call recording capabilities, I won't use it as a phone.)

The device drivers themselves ARE, more or less, ready. A Japanese guy next to me during the press conference at MWC did use the device to check his mail and I didn't see frequent resets. Actually, he used it as if it would have been a regular, bugfree communicator.

In addition, terminal.hu even received a test unit running WM6.1 (see http://www.terminal.hu/cikk.php?article_id=109586 ; my article on their report is HERE (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=mwc_breaking_sony_ericsson_xperia_x1_new&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1) ) and they promised to even review it - that is, it can't be in that bad a shape.

All in all, I just don't get why the S-E folks don't release this thing ASAP - preferably tomorrow. There simply isn't anything comparable on the market right now: ALL current of soon-coming VGA devices out there are far inferior to X1. (See my yesterday-posted all-in-one review, along with my former i-mate VGA review, if interested: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=450611 )

Sony Ericsson have in the past. The delay between the SE P990 being announced and released must have been at least a year. Again, flagship product with a massive delay despite physical handsets being shown off very early.

I'm not surprised by this revelation.

Lenghty delays always produce underwhelming results/devices (Motorola MPX, iMate Ultimate...) so I too hope this is a typo.

After all they can release the device with 6.1 now and do the X1+ or something like this with WM7 when it's released.

They should ask themselves what would hurt them more:
- releasing the phone in 2008 without the fancy WM7 interface (knowing Microsoft it won't be quite what we expect) and have the most desired WM device on the the market or...
- wait until 2009, when this will only be another "me too" device (if HTC is building the X1 then there is no reason why they wouldn't release device or two with similar specifications) going against 3G iPhone, new Nokias, Android...

Looks like a simple typo.

Look again at the table

X1 10/02/2008 10/02/2009 10/02/2013
C902 10/02/2008 26/05/2008 26/05/2011
W760 07/01/2008 26/05/2008 26/05/2011
C702a 10/02/2008 26/05/2008 26/05/2011

Of the three devices that follow the X1, two share the same 'coming soon' date, but all three havea release date of May 26.

Wouldn't be unreasonable to guess May 26 is the date for the X1 too ... jus tin time for my borthday :D
