The new version primarily offers compatibility with Office 2007's Open XML formats, but also adds enhanced chart viewing in Excel Mobile, support for SmartArt in PowerPoint mobile, and ZIP support in File Explorer. Get it while it's hot!

wow, has anyone installed it yet? I assume it is not a "rom" patch and takes up additional space? Any idea how much space this eats up?

It takes 12.7 mb. I installed to main memory because it was a preinstalled software. I didn't think I could install to a storage card because I thought I'd have a duplicate. Was I right?

Just as a note. My HTC TyTN II already has office mobile version 6.1. So there is probably no need for the people with new devices to install this upgrade.

Seeing that it will work for WM5 i installed it on my old 8125. It takes up 6.69 Mb of free space.
It also associates a little program called Zip Mobile with .zip files. Pretty nice for those who do not have any kind of unzip utility. But i am not sure who that would actually be... As all HTC devices come with some kind of zip utility in the rom. ;)

It does uninstall nicely. You can remove it and your previous version of office will be there and still function just fine if you were to change your mind after installing this update.

It looks like this would be a great update for anyone still running WM5. Do they make WM6 devices with out office 6.1? Maybe some of the early devices have 6.0 in the rom.. I am not aware of the differences between 6.0 and 6.1 if a 6.0 actually exists.. Over all i would say that this will be a waste of space for most WM6 users.
Cheers to Microsoft for releasing it as an update though!! Good to see that not all of their old device users are left out in the cold. :) Perhaps this is a sign of things to come. Maybe we will see more WM updates released in the future direct from Microsoft.

Stupid question: How can I tell which version of Office Mobile my WM 6 device (HTC Advantage x7501) has? I don't see an About option from within Word Mobile nor anything in the Device Information.

Although I'm pretty sure it must have Office Mobile 6.0 because Word Mobile is not recognizing .docx files.

Unfortunately, needing to install to device RAM is a deal-killer for me.

The warning says it is not compatible with WM5 builds less than 14847. I'm running 14410. I've looked all over trying to find the upgrade and haven't succeeded. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks.

I tried to install on Sprint HTC Touch and got a message that a newer version is already on my machine. Checking Word Mobile (you have open a word file then the About menu will come up in the File menu), it said it's version 6.1.

Microsoft says:
• At least 6 MB of Available Storage on your device or storage card. (emphasis mine)

You have to launch one of the apps, Word or Excel, and open a document before you will see the "about" option in the menu.

Guess I was mistaken. I tried this and it does indeed appear to work from a card. :)

Is this the same thing Handango is trying to sell for $49.95????? Got an email from them today with a link to location to buy this very package (or so it appears). File size and version indicated are the same as the .msi file I downloaded following link in this thread. They are very generously offering a discount code to get $10.00 off the $49.95 price. Interesting.....

It is a free upgrade to anyone who already has office mobile on their device. If you happen to have a device without office mobile (are there any?) you will need to purchase it.

Strait from the download page...
If your Windows Mobile device does not have a version of Microsoft Office Mobile prior to 6.1, you can purchase the full version of Microsoft Office Mobile.

This is also not needed for the HTC Artemis (P3300) if you have the latest WM6 ROM.

Thanks Jason,

Shows what I get for not reading the MS page. Just downloaded it because I knew it was free to me. Will have to look at the Handango page again 'cause I don't think they were clear about it.

Ok, got it installed on my HTC Advantage. Now my Advantage can finally do something my iPhone has been able to do from the start: open .docx files.

Honestly, I have no idea how Microsoft managed to ship Office Mobile 6 and launch WM 6 without support for the current version of desktop Office... Anyway, better late than never!

This might seem incredible that I don't know this but I haven't been keeping up with the updates. I have a Dell Axim X51V with WM5.0. Is there an update to WM 6.0 that I can do and then get the update to windows mobile?

I don't know what version of WM 5 Axim x51v's have. Depending on the Build #, you might be able to upgrade to Office Mobile 6.1 without changing your OS to WM 6.

I believe there are unofficial "cooked" WM 6 ROMs for the Dell Axim x51v. There is no official WM 6 ROM upgrade from Dell for the x51v.

I couldn't tell you whether the unofficial WM 6 ROM would allow you to upgrade to Office Mobile 6.1 or not.

I too have an X-51v and there is not going to be an official WM 6 release from Dell. Check your Axim. Mine is build 14957 which is supposedly ok based on a previous post in this thread.

I have Mobile 6.0 and Word with a document open it has NO 'About' option in the Menu>File popup.

Curious -- neither does mine. Perhaps only the upgraded version has the About option. I'm going to install the update on a storage card and see...

... Yes, it appears that upgrading to 6.1 get's you the About menu.

When installing to a storage card, it puts everything in the /windows folder on that card. In fact I think it cleared some things from my main memory -- I have a little bit more free space now.

You should also be able to find your version from the registry.
HKLM-software-microsoft-office mobile-version

there are two values. major and minor. 6 and 1 respectivly for my version 6.1.

this may be different on older versions though. but might be worth a look. :)

I just looked on my X7501 USA bought in August and the key is not in Mobile Office. Guess they added it when the made the point release. I'm glad to hear that it might be installable to the SD card.

I just got an AT&T Tilt (HTC TytnII) 2 weeks ago and it already has 6.1 installed.
