From tomorrow through February of next year, 8525 owners can download their first non-cooked version of Redmond's latest mobile OS, giving them some much-needed conveniences like simplified tethering -- and a much-needed refresh for an operating system that's grown a little long in the tooth. So, plug in your Hermes and go nuts; just remember to backup all your info and applications, because they'll be gone daddy gone in less than five minutes."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/att_8525_l.gif" /><br /><br />For those waiting for an official update for the <a href="http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?device=AT%26T+8525&q_sku=sku970003">AT&amp;T 8525</a>, <a href="http://www.america.htc.com/support/8525/software-downloads.html">here it is</a>, weighing in at 56.9 MB. One tip from the Engadget post comments: if after the upgrade you can no longer make or receive calls, remove the battery and SIM card from the phone, and put them back in. The upgrade will only be available through next February though, so get it now.

Will this upgrade also work for the AT&amp;T 8125?

No! WM is device specific, so don't even try. Chances are it won't even let you install it on your 8125 and if it does, you will end up with a nice brick.

No WM6 upgrade for the 8125. Too bad because I thought the processor / memory would support it.

Two days ago I Updated my 8525 to the new Rom. I work in the IT field so the new features of Windows Mobile 6 are important to me. Under WM5 I seemed to always be soft-reseting because it would lock up or the settings just wouldn't take. Now with the new update i'm able to switch between my networks more smoothly and i have yet to have a Bluetooth problem. The only one I haven't tried it with is my GPS unit yet, but i'm sure its fine.

Improvments i've noticed:
1. More free space.
2. Connectivity with WiFi, 3G, and Bluetooth all improved
3. Overall Speed of device has increased.
4. Certain options are already turned on (Disconnect button and timer for 3G/Edge network)

Things didn't like:
1. Had to put all my programs and settings back the way I wanted them. I know thats not the Roms fault I just really dislike doing that.

Side Note: I also upgraded to the new SPB PocketPlus 4.0. A much improved program with lots of cool features. Between the Rom update and the PocketPlus4.0 its like I have a whole new phone. If you have the 8525, backup your phone, get everything off it you want and do the update. Its simple and only take 20 minutes or so. Then you have to spend the couple hours getting the way you want it but its worth it and you'll have that...

I am encountering an error whenever I try to do the upgrade, and HTC's FAQ is not helping me.

Does anyone know where I can find a good forum or site to see if others are having a similar problem?

Thanks.

What seems to be the problem with the update? http://www.howardforums.com/ is a good one to try for help.

Thanks, LordFuzzy. Nice name, BTW!

Right at the beginning of the actual installation of the ROM (i.e., after clicking "Next" multiple times and the progress bar appears), the ActiveSync connection is lost and I get a connection error.

I've tried the installation on 2 different computers and even hard reset the phone (mercy), multiple soft resets on PC and PPC, etc. Same problem.

Thanks i've used it for years in the gaming world. Does your phone go into Rom Loader Mode (Its a Red Green and Bue Screen with some crazy numbers scattered around the screen.)? Also make sure you have Outlook or any other program that uses ActiveSync closed so the phone doesn't try to update or something. And make sure you have the Newest ActiveSync i think it is 4.5. You must have the new version to use Windows Mobile 6.0 anyway. I know this might seem like a stupid question but you are using a USB cable instead of the Bluetooth connection to sync the phone correct? I'm just checking.

ADDITION: Try taking the battery and the SIM card out waiting for a couple minutes then putting them back in and starting the update again. Apparently it helps reset the device.
