View Full Version : Free From Walls and Outlets: Win A Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger

<i>"Plug any USB powered mobile device (phone, iPod, digital camera etc.) into the battery's standard USB port and recharge anywhere. Even power hungry devices like the iPod 5G will recharge and play for up to three times longer when connected to the Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger (USB Rechargeable Battery) and you can recharge your mobile, Smartphone or PDA anywhere."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/westfall-proporta-battery.jpg" /> <br /><br />Alright, here's a seriously awesome accessory that I'm sure everyone here will want. I bought one of these when they came out and love it - on weekend trips I NEVER charge from a wall outlet! Now my device can charge sitting in my bag without worrying about leaving the device, charger, or cable behind! Couple that with the piece of mind that it will be there to give you power diety-forbid that your device is dead in the middle of a desert in july with no water, car, camel, or guide, and you've got a pretty nice package. We've got a few of these to give away, so here's how you can get one:<br /><br />1. Post how you'd use one of these things, and/or how they would have helped you out of a jam in the past!<br />2. Post before Sept 21, 12:00 PM TST (Thoughts Standard Time, AKA MDT).<br />3. I'll pick randomly from those who meet both criteria (which means just posting "I want one" will NOT qualify you. I want comments and stories people - it makes my life more interesting!). <br /><br />Good luck!

I want one of these things -- just in case :)

I keep my ETEN phone and ipod 5G plugged in as much as possible, so I rarely run out of juice on my normal work week.

Once in a while though, I get to go on a cross-country trip, and since neither device is famous for long battery life, it would be handy for that rechage while waiting for connecting flights.

I've got a Compaq iPAQ that has a tendency to run low on power when I least want it to. The abililty to recharge it and it's (soon-to-be acquired) successor from the same device on a moment's notice would be a REALLY nice thing to have.

My wife calls its the "$2000 bag"...I call it my "electronic survival kit". Its a Brenthaven laptop bag that I take with me when travelling. It contains everything I need to be connected if I want to...including a myriad of chargers to support my iPod, PSP, cell phone etc etc. Its so easy to forget one of them. Nothing sadder than a dead piece of electronics.

Its also easy to find your self in a situation where you just need extended battery life.

For all of these reasons the Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger should be mine...please ;)

Mine would have to be on a trip to Hawaii a few years back. I got my nice shiny brand new PDA/Phone that I'm showing off. We are driving in the car and my wife asks where some restraunt or something is...I'm totally prepared to google the location and have the answer in no time. Only to realize I didn't bring a car charger and forgot to use the wall plug the night before. Dead phone, dead pda... egg on my face.

I carry practically everything in my gadget bag. To have it charge while in the bag is just plain cool.

On long flights to Kosovo from the US, additional power would be awesome. Even at the theoretical best battery life, my devices just don't last the 20 some hours. (the one exception was on a US flight when there was a 110AC outlet next to my seat)

Plus, having the option to charge my iPod or iPaq battery without being tethered to a wall would be great.

As a busy physician, I need access to and enter information on my QTEK 9000 many times during a long day in the hospital. To be able to carry a small backup charger would be very helpful since I do not have access to a briefcase or an office and have to carry everything in a pocket in my scrubs. This charger would be perfect.

I can't count the number of cords/doodads I have to schlep along on my weekly business trips. Any technology that might help reduce the weight of my carry one bag would be a blessing.

I'd really like, too, to be able to charge in situations where I don't want to be running a cord in a public area -- like a meeting room or airport waiting area.

Frustration is Geocaching and being on the third leg of a multi-cache when suddenly the display goes dead on my iPAQ. Aarghhhhh. There goes a waste of an hour and a half. Luckily I can still find my way back to the car. This would be a great tool to have when when trying to power a Pocket PC and BT GPS while on the go!
- Thanks for considering me!

Hey all,

This little guy would help me a lot as I travel in some remote places throughout Asia; plus, the long train rides (such as 36+ hours) wouldn't be so electrically-challenging. I even avoided getting any MP3 that had a rechargable battery when I was living in China, for I wanted to be able to change the batteries; this would have solved that issue.

Clammering around Everest Base Camp doesn't provide many opportunities to plug in either. It's good to know that options such as these rechargers are becoming smaller, more reliable, and less expensive. Now, I just need to turn my long-sleeve travel shirts into solar-chargers.

I too could use one of these! I carry my Dell x51v with me wherever I go. However, since I bought a Motorola Q, I haven't been taking it out of my bag as much and thus not charging it as much. I would love to have one of these in my bag to recharge my pocketpc. The Dell is what I use as my Tom Tom too. There have been a number of times I've wanted to use it, but since I forgot to charge it, I was out of luck. If I went home every night, charging would not be an issue, but I'm on the go a lot. This would help solve my low batt problems! So, please, consider me for your give away. If it helps, I've never won here before ;) Oh, and btw, you are a very handsome man and smart too! I hope to be more like you!

Well, as a medical student with rotations up to 36 hours long each, my poor Sprint 6700 can't keep up with the pace (nor can I hehe), and it usually schleps out on me just as I get some free time to check up on the outside world. This gizmo would help me out a great bit!

I need the Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger when my wife and I
go to Venice Italy next year for a 14 day cruise. I enjoy taping a Bluetooth GPS receiver to the window of th e aircraft and monitoring our location on my Dell X51V during the trip using GPS Tuner. The Dell needs a boost after a couple of hours and this would be great for that purpose. I can use it to keep my T-Mobile SDA topped off as well for internet browsing once I get to Venice or most places in Europe.

I would use one of these Proporta chargers on a canoe trip into Minnesota's BWCWA ( Boundary Waters Canoe Wildnerness Area). I could use my GPS-enabled device to determine just where I was on a wilderness lake, how far from the next portage, and to determine just where is that next portage (in foggy weather)!! The Proporta should give me up to a week's use of my mobile device.

Oh yes, just the gadget for me!
Transaltlantic flights with 3 changes are looking much less bothersome already.
also charging in the bag is awesome, no more hangning out by the power outlet in hotel lobbies and airports
Maybe I'll be able to ditch the 5800mAh battery in my old tosh e800 pocket PC, and go back to slim and sexy devices,
the old tosh is definitiely looking weary and is a huge brick - but where else can you get 7 hours VGA video and still have 35% battery left

Here's a contest I can't pass up!

This would be great everytime I leave the house for more than a day. Especially on vacation when. Half my packing checklist is cables for charging all the devices I bring. Every weekend away from home, I'm out in a strange place, turn on the GPS... Woops, I don't have a spare battery for this device yet!

dockehr: I hope they send you a few of these! My device never lasts more than a day--and that's without using it as a media player. Sounds like fun though. :) Remember, phones and water don't get along well.

Oh man, this would be great! I do a lot of international travel and keeping everything charged is a major challenge. Sometimes, I'm 2-3 days between wall outlets and even when you have one, it's not always easy to get things done. For example, this past June, my wife and I were traveling in Africa. The wall converters for where we stayed are huge, about the size of a computer mouse, so we only carried one with us. Yet here we were with two digital SLR cameras, a digital P&amp;S camera, my Pocket PC, her Pocket PC, a handheld GPSr and a mobile phone. Keeping everything charged took some planning since we could only charge one thing at a time and, since we weren't in the same place for more than two nights in a row, we usually couldn't leave things charging while we were out during the day. There were a couple of times when I had to stay awake late, while my wife slept, waiting for that next-to-last thing to charge so I could switch it out and finally go to sleep. Having something like this would have competely changed the equation, making a long and tedious job much less long and less tedious.

Well, I have, in the past temporarily set my iPAQ to not turn off if on battery, then shut it off, but it came back on with an alarm, stayed on and ran the battery on....Luckily I was going home soon and was able to get it to the charger before it lost everything (older model). Plus, I couldn't look anything up for the rest of the day.

Also, I have been frustrated when my Jawbone Bluetooth headset has run out of juice early in the day of an on the road day....bummer.

This device would solve both of my problems and the new ones for the new devices planed for purchase :)

My pda phone's battery just doesn't last quite long enough. It always seems to hit that sub 10% range when I need to make an important call. I'd have this little beauty for those kinds of situations.

Another one is for use with my Axim X5 and a Garmin cfQue. The batteries sure don't last as long as I need them to and this would be a great backup in those cases. There's nothing quite like being in a strange city and losing your only way to navigate!

I was in Central London, using maps on my phone with an external GPS receiver, trying to find the Motorway M1 to go up North. Guess what happens, first my GPS power failed, so I started the "navigation" without-GPS mode on my phone. Boy, it surely didn't take long before the phone power was down too. I ended up taking 2 hours just to find the entrance to the motorway!!! I was almost mugged when asking for directions in a seedy area, but luckily the window was not rolled down too much, and I was able to drive away quickly. If I had this USB charger, I would be able to charge up both my phone and GPS in emergency. I would really love to get this. Thanks.

I'd use it for those times when I have my Treo, my JAMin, my bluetooth headset, my iPod video, and my hopefully soon-to-be iPod Nano with me.

The collective of charges should not be larger than the collective of devices!

This is perfect for those times when a battery pack for your Axim is not enough - especially for lectures that you need to record that last around 6 hours and having to be selective of what you can record.

Don't Panic!

Well I used to have a homemade AA adapter for my Dell x51v. I remember I went to Egypt, and I forgot to bring my adapters. It was really hard to find one because, well it's Egypt!

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I ended up wiring it so that it could feed my camera and my pda - saved all my photos from Egypt. Can you imagine leaving such a place without a photo?

So, a proper USB solution would be fantastic - saves me trying to wire one up myself!

On any given day, I carry about 3-5 devices which can be powered from the USB, and I also have an Energizer AA charger solutiont hat uses USB. I usually have a BT headset, a PDA, and a phone which can be charged with USB. Iv'e had problems with losing power to one or two devices... which with the phone can be REALLY inconvenient, and only slightly less so with the headset as it's a stereo A2DP set.

A charger set like this would definitely make my day easier; especially since it would ensure that I won't be low on power on the phone or the headset... both of which see at least a BIT of usage each day.

I use my Axim PDA and bluetooth headset at work everyday for different spreadsheets, inventory, counting money, logging my daily tasks and of course music when I get the chance. I also like to take my TV shows with me in case I find myself waiting in line somewhere with nothing to do.

This device would cut down on the number of extra batteries I carry, just in case, and would keep me from running out of power on my wireless headset.

My PDA is not just a toy for me, it's part of me. If I don't have it on me, I feel like I've lost something important.

I'd love one of this! I am a consultant and travelling most of the times, not to mention the number of meetings I have to go to. Most PPC phones I have (MDA, Wing, 8525, and now Mogul) ran out of juice by 4:00 PM, so I have to keep remembering to recharge via USB (slow recharge) or when I drive.

I'd use it to not have to carry all those charger deals, not only for my Axim, but also my mp3 player, bluetooth headset, mobile phone, etc. If I don't win, I'm going to look into buying one (Gosh, I hope this doesn't hurt my chances!)

Wow!! this is a great piece for gadget lovers!

I wanted to buy one a while back/

I spend a lot of time on the raod, and my gear tends to get drained of power - I use a FSC PocketLoox N560, Ipod Nano, Plantronics 645 BT headset. all need power.
I have a couple of items from Proporta - sync cable, car holder, case. all are great.

Had a few times in the past in which I had no more power
- on a plane from ORegom to Santa Clara - couldn't listen to any music
- navigating my way to a meeting, and suudenly - no power on my N560- no GPS anymore!!

good luck ecevybody!!

This is indeed a cool accessory. Like a lot of us here, I take many items when I go on long trips and always seem to forget the charger for the one I end up using most. This would solve a lot of problems.

My most recent outage was actually only two days ago. I have moved into a new house and of course nothing is where it should be (including my flashlight). The power was out when I got home at 8:30 and of course it was going to be dark shortly. I was using my Axim as a light source to read the phone book to call in the trouble and of course it died as I had not charged it recently (since I got my new phone). The phone was used next as the light source but it was only temporary as I needed it in case the power company called back.

It's amazing how little you can do when it is completely dark. It turned out that a bird had a bad experience with a power line.

I use my new Toshiba g900 for everything. EVERYTHING. 8O 8O 8O

Seriously: GPS (TomTom + BT receiver), media player (Pocket Player + Anycom stereo headphones), camera and drawing pad (Pocket Artist), agenda (Pocket Informant), communicator (phone, sms, e-mail), internet tablet (Netfront), guitar tuner (PhonTuner), e-book reader (Repligo,...), shopping list (ListPro) and, most intensively, mobile office (Textmaker + Stowaway BT keyboard, Adobe Reader) to write my PhD in philosophy.

And then some things you don't wanna know about.

So yeah. I need me one of these.

I need a secret charging station...let me tell you why. I have 3 sons. Between the stolen ipod charger (someone always forget his), the need for my mini usb charger for the other son's cell (he fogot his too) and my son needing my emergency charger for his gambooy (you got it!...he forgot his too) Dad is lucky to have something to charge his MDA. If he does.....try finding an unused port in the car or at home...it's near impossible.

I'd like this to be my secret charger...no one will now I have it...and they won't understand why I'm smiling when they "borrow" my many other plug in chargers..... :)

I've been wanting to start watching BattleStar Galactica but didn't want to jump in the middle so I decided to start from the beginning. I'm midway through the old 1978 series, then have the short 1980, and the newer seasons 1-3. I'm trying to get through it all before season 4 starts. So I've been watching them on my x51v. I take it everywhere and watch whenever I can but I always have to stay near an electric outlet or just stop when the battery gets too low. The Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger would allow me to watch longer and anywhere!

I go on the HotRod PowerTour roadtrip every year which covers at least 5 states. This year, I was almost stranded when my cigarette lighter adaptor died on me while on the road. You see, when my Treo 750 ran out of juice, there goes my navigator!

This charger would be great on emergency situation such as this. Thanks for the chance to win this great charger.

Easy - It would be great for walking

The Artemis I have is not the best for battery life.

I was once on a walk with a number of friends - the first 8-9 miles great - helped my Memory Map (didn't really need it though!!) - but the last mile the battery packed up and we got well and truly lost. It added 45 minutes to the whole walk.

I would just plug in and carry on, then time for a longer rest at the pub at the end

Cheers :D

How will I use this device? I just unpacked my bags at my hotel room for a week long business trip and was amazed at the jungle of wires, cable, power supplies, and charging devices that I have. I think something like this will save me a few pounds, quite a bit of space, and most of all provide me with a great deal of flexiblity.

Similar to others here I too would use it to power my plethora of mobile devices from my wizard to my HX4700, BT headphones, and my wifes Ipod.

As for how and where I would use it, well I will tell you about a frequent journey we take to visit my parents who live in New Jersey.

My wife works for Jetblue and we fly from Salt Lake City to JFK airport. Jetblue employees and their travel buddies only get on the direct flight 20% of the time (which requires a 2-3 hour wait just to see if you make it). If you do make it is a 5 hour red eye flight (which I can never sleep on). If you aren't lucky then you come back at 4 am and fly to Long Beach CA then turn around and fly to JFK (6 hours). Once you get to JFK it is another 2 hours of subways and trains. Needless to say there isn't a device in existence to handle that.

Even worse is the travel home. If JFK direct to SLC and JFK - Long Beach - SLC aren't available we fly to Las Vegas (have some dinner and gamble :)) rent a car and drive 6 hours to get home. Arriving around 3-4 am.

Not that this is better than some others (kosovo, wow), but now you know how much of a life saver this would be!!

I don't have an iPod yet I listen to the music often with my PDA.

I don't go to gym yet I often hike and camp with my PDA stored essential camp information like hiking routes.

I don't have a Game boy yet I play games using my PDA.

I don't have a voice recorder yet I use my PDA to record important lecture, meeting, notes, and, voice journals as well as my dog's snoring.

I don't have a spared battery for my HP 4350 and I don't have a Mobile Device Charger.

With these much of actives going on with my 4350, it needs an energy booster so desperately when an outlet is unreachable. A Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger must be a good companion for my 4350.

I could have use that these last few years hiking the At and CDT. I first tried my iPAQ with a small AA battery charger to take notes while hiking. It got too heavy within the first few days so I shipped it home and went to pencile and paper. Next I tried an old Palm 125 that used AA batteries. Again too heavy so I sent it home. Went back to pencile and paper. Next year I intend to start the PCT for the Tripple Crown. It would be nice to not have to use pencile and paper.

1. Post how you'd use one of these things, and/or how they would have helped you out of a jam in the past!

I could use this to.
1. reduce my inflight bagage weight by 10 lbs in misc cords.
2. not having to take my cords with me to work everyday.
3. Just not having a cord for every gadget i haveon my person.

2. Post before Sept 21, 12:00 PM TST (Thoughts Standard Time, AKA MDT).

Done.

i have a pdaphone that I use a lot during the day. So one battery is not enough and I have bought a second battery. Unfortunately when you change your battery the pdaphone do like a softreset. With the Proporta usb charger, I will never have this issue. I will even be able to change my battery without this issue if the phone is powered by the charger during the exchange.

Hope I will win. Thanks.

I had met a lack of power when i was returning from my business trip to Malaysia at March 2007. I was waiting for boarding on the Kuala Lumpur airport after a whole day site seeing tour. Whole day without any possibility to charge my mobile phone, notebook or PDA. It was not so bad because it was just the way home with one transfer and all had been arranged before. But where was more than 2 hours delay on boarding and no way to charge my gadget. So I missed my connecting flight and I have no power to charge my phone and PDA whose I had heavily used all day in the city. It was so bad because I had arranged a lift from the airport to home. So than I have landed at Prague I firstly have been looking for the power outlet to charge my phone and call back a business car for my lift home.
So it is essential to have some extra power pack to use it.

I always seem to buy Pocket PC's that don't seem to make it through the whole day. I'm currently using a O2 XDA Flame that is the shortest living unit out there. When I'm out in the field, I'm in construction, there isn't anywhere to charge up easily. I could go back to my truck and plug it in to the charger, but then I have to sit there. I need something I can keep with me for in a pinch, then I'll be set. Normally it always seems to be at the end of the afternoon about the 3 o'clock hour that I need a little boost. Something like this would be just PERFECT!! Thanks.

You have no idea how much I need one of these!

I work for a humanitarian agency in Somalia and we run a large health programme with mother &amp; child health clinics in remote rural areas serving around 600,000 people. My i-mate K-JAM has become an increasingly invaluable gadget while travelling there. We have to fly in and out of different areas in small planes with tiny luggage allowances, so leaving behind a laptop is a big bonus, and I can write reports, notes, budgets etc on the go with my K-JAM (sometimes with a Think Outside Bluetooth folding keyboard) and 2GB mini-SD. Mobile phone networks are paradoxically very good in many parts of Somalia, so I use the phone a lot. We often need to take GPS records of unmarked roads, wells, villages etc. Basic photos and video clips help to record health staff and volunteers at work (though to be honest I have to use a better digi camera for anything that we hope to publish). And it's nice to have music &amp; podcasts to listen to, and e-books to read, on the long uncomfortable flights and road journeys around the country, as well as Pocket Stars to see what I'm looking up at in the evenings! All on one beautiful, pocket-sized dream (though one day I'm dreaming of an HTC TyTN II upgrade...).

In the "major" towns in Somalia, there is fairly reliable power, but out in the countryside it's very patchy and often only for a few hours here and there with a generator, so on longer trips I have to be extremely frugal with usage. This Proporta charger would basically solve my problems. Pretty please...

I could use this for my iPod nano, or Axim 51v, but the truth is I need this for my sanity on car trips with our 3 year old daughter. She's got an mp3 player that runs on 2 AAA batteries that dies after 1 hour. When mp3 player = "on", daughter = "content". When mp3 player = "off", daughter = "full-all-out-whine-mode".

Replacing batteries is always an option, but the mp3 player has a screw lock to the battery compartment which isn't fun to do when driving. A portable USB charger that can be plugged into it would better make her happy, and in turn makes me happy as well.

I have an extra standard battery for my Sprint Mogul but each of these would last me only about 4-6 hours on average use. For some extended trip, I definitely need more juice to back up the batteries and this would be a great backup power source. The advantage of having this compared to an extended battery is it won't make the device bigger after charge although you need to have it plugged-in during time of charging/use so it may be more suited for backup. One other advantage is it's universal across all USB devices that you could use the same package to charge future devices when you upgrade.

Now that I have effectively moved to a converged device in the form of an HTC x7500 (I know it's not really primarily a phone, but it works for me), I've experienced the disadvantage of not having a separate PDA - when I use the PDA functions a lot, I run the risk of not having access to a phone! This would be a lifesaver in low battery situations when I don't have access to a wall socket.

The other way that this would be really, really practical is that it would let me charge my devices where I have an incompatible wall charger. As an example, I bought a bluetooth headset with an American charger that I can't use (I live in South Africa); owning one of these would mean I wouldn't have to be hunting a computer to charge my headset through the USB port.

Ooh, ooh, pick me. I want one. ;)

OK, that joke is probably getting old. But look, I listen to my MP3 player at work, which has a USB sync/charge cable but no AC adaptor, so oftentimes by the end of the day, I am fresh out of juice fo rthe train ride home.

I have several previous daily driver PDAs that I have mostly retired. But I keep them plugged in as sometines I refer back to them for misplaced programs or Reg codes. I have them in a pile with all the chargers plugged into a power strip on a corner table in my home office - not a pretty sight. I think the Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger will simplify the situation. :D
Thanks for the contest... Ron...

Alright Ladies &amp; Gentlemen, Boys &amp; Girls, Dogs &amp; Cats, &amp; Others - the contest has closed! I'll spend my weekend randomly choosing the winners, and will have the results up next week sometime!

I've probably lost count of how many times I've headed out the door, just to find I'd forgotten to charge my ipod, or pda.

If this does all it purports  , then no more will I find myself unable to read my favourite blog (Pocket PC Thoughts, of course) whilst on the move

Thx. Grant..
