I've just swapped from a Treo 650 to Windows Mobile, and am finding the noticeable reduction in data access speed very irritating, and am thus wondering if there's anything I can do to fix this.

In particular, moving around inside the calendar and contacts apps is excruciatingly slow. Possibly this is because I prefer to sync all my appointments, past and future (there are just under 4,000 in total), instead of just the past few weeks? If only syncing a subset of my diary is the only way to resolve the problem then I'm indeed disappointed, since my old Treo didn't struggle at all.

I don't think it's a hardware issue since I've experienced the problem with two separate handsets (HTC TyTN and HP iPAQ hw6915). I've tried soft resetting, without any improvement in performance. The only other apps that I've loaded are Skype (altho I hardly ever run it and close it down properly when I'm done) and eWallet.

I'm going to try removing most of my diary to see if that helps, but would very much prefer to be able to keep all my appointments on the device, so any other ideas would very much be appreciated ... thanks in advance for any and all help.

Shanklin,
I was once a Palm head, many years ago now. Now on my 4th or 5th WM device, I can feel your pain!

Yes, searching and data access on a palm was faster. But the thing that seemed to make a light bulb go off in my head was the fact that these windows mobile devices used to be called Pocket PC. That PC thing shouldn't be overlooked. It's a PC that fits in your pocket. I routinely multitask on my Cingular 8525, bluetooth headset on, listening to music, taking calls, reading e-mails, browsing the web, maybe even watching or streaming a video every now and again. Sure when I need to search or bring up a contact (I have about 2500 on the device) I do have to wait much longer than I want, but I do have the luxury of having 3 other things to do while I wait.

I especially noticed the speed difference when the move to WM5 and persistent storage happened. I believe it's a limitation brought on by the need to balance performance and battery life.

Not a solution, but just a perspective.

I wish you success in your switch, it's probably more of an adjustment than most will give credit, but I know from being there that it's the kind of move that you fight until it just clicks... worts and all.

Thanks STSanford. I removed all my old diary entries from the HP, and performance improved noticeably, so clearly the volume of data is the issue.

It's a bit disappointing really --- surely it couldn't have been too hard to program the device to manage large data volumes better.

I agree with your experience. when I had my palm t3 I remember spending thousands of dollas to make it function as a pc. finally I Broke down and purchased a Dell X51V ... Since then I have spent maybe 200 dollars on software which are mostly just bells and whistle programs. I love that I have a device that came out of the box with all of the functions I wanted

I wish I would have made the switch years ago. would have saved me thousands of dollars.
