Gaming news: two Inscenic games go free; two new racing games by OmniGSoft

Inscenic (http://www.inscenic.com) (known for their great Stratego clone NapoleonX (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1524&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1), Warring Nations (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1506&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1) and Creatonia (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1019&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)) have just made their well-known Galaxy Gate (http://www.inscenic.com/product.php?id=9) and Retro Detonation (http://www.inscenic.com/product.php?id=8) free.

The former is a puzzle game; the latter a Bomberman clone and, for free, are highly recommended. Make sure you get them!

Not so with OmniGSoft (http://omnigsoft.com/) (see my last review / list of their games here (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1508&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)), who have just come out with a new game, Snow Rally, with two maps: one for Canada (http://www.omnigsoft.com/products/2006/SnowRallyCanada/SnowRally.html), the other for a city (http://www.omnigsoft.com/products/2006/SnowRallyCityStage/CityStage.html).

Unfortunately, the problems traditionally plaguing all (!) OmniGSoft racing games (no OpenGL ES (3D hardware accelerator) support (before you ask: yes, I've checked this on my x51v), low-resolution graphics (as opposed to Raging Thunder even on non-accelerated VGA models!), no multiplayer, a 3-4 sec (for the menu, some 10-12 second long), really low-quality, mono music clip endlessly repeating, mono sounds, overpriced) are present in these two titles too. Therefore, I don’t really recommend these two games – there are much better racing titles out there; for example, (the 2D top-down title) K-Rally (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1531&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1), Raging Thunder (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1360&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1); several Mario Kart clones (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/menneisyys/MarioKartPPCClones.asp) or, if you have a 3D accelerated Windows Mobile device, Stuntcar Extreme & GeoRallyEX (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1095&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1). I think you’ll want to check out the latter titles first.

Thanks for the heads up on the free software! I've gotta agree with you on the Rally racing. I ran it on an IPAq 3850, so it looked pretty good, and I was surprised about how fast it ran on an older PPC, but it just lacked luster. No real feel of sliding physics, and no collision with trees even. Just seemed unfinished.

My personal favorite for freeware has got to be Pocket Heroes. I've got it in the file site at my site: Legacy Handhelds (http://www.legacyhandhelds.com) Its free, and will even run on Win Pocket PC 2002.

Take care,

Chris
