Hi:

Resolving Conflicts Options

Although i've seen something similar in another post, i haven't found anything that addresses my question exactly.

I have a Cingular 8525 and ActiveSync 4.5 running with Windows XP SP2 (fully updated and patched) and Outlook 2007. In earlier versions of ActiveSync, i was given the option of choosing whether conflicts would have the desktop overwrite the Pocket PC, whether the Pocket PC would overwrite the desktop; or leave it unresolved so i could manually select.

It appears that this option is no longer available in AS 4.5. So, does that mean every time there is a conflict it will be resolved in favor of the desktop? If so, wouldn't that mean that if i change any appointments or tasks on my 8525, that the changes won't make it to my desktop? Making any change on the 8525 by its very nature creates a conflict b/t the 8525 and the desktop, right? That seems too silly to be the way it works. If it does work that way, it would remove a huge chunk of the Pocket PC's functionality. Surely even microsoft wouldn't be that moronic!

Hoping that the above isn't true, is the way it works that if i change something on my pocket pc, then change the same thing to something else on my desktop, the next time i sync it will resolve in favor of the change i made on my desktop? I hope not b/c i don't always remember what i've changed, since i don't always have the chance to sync. I must admit i find it difficult to understand why this option would be unavailable in AS 4.5.

Does anyone know of any workarounds for this?

Adjusting Memory Allocation

It appears that there is no way to reallocate the RAM on the pocket pc to allow for more performance and less storage. Is that correct? since it probably is correct, are there anyways around this? I want to store most of my programs on my storage card. If i can't allocate more to performance, then it looks like about 25% or so of my RAM ends up being unused and useless. I mean, by refusing to increase RAM even in the newer pocket pcs, they are already forcing us to buy storage cards. So, there doesn't seem to be a reason to remove this option.

Assuming I can't allocate my memory (the phone's, not mine), has anyone figured out a way to work around this issue?

Thanks to those of you who have taken the time to read this far. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas you can offer.

Jeff - welcome to PPCT!

I can't answer your first question (I don't use WM5 or AS4.x) but as to your second:

The memory model used in WM5 onwards is significantly different from what came before. With WM5, all RAM is now used for program execution and it is no longer possible to use RAM for storage purposes. What you see under storage on your device is not RAM at all - it's onboard flash ROM (think: internal storage card). This memory model is more analogous to the setup found on a PC - RAM for program execution, and flash ROM/HDD for file and data storage. It is for this reason that manufacturers have settled towards 64MB RAM as standard. They just don't think any more than that is strictly necessary since you no longer have to set aside some portion for storage.

In other words - don't worry about it ;).

And I can answer the first part. Yes it is still there in WM5/AS4.x. A bit hidden maybe, in AS on the desktop Tools>Options>Settings> If there is a conflict. We did lose the ask each time option. Unfortunately that's the one I used.

That's also where the time and date sync option is hiding.

Now let me correct a misconception you have. Changing an appointment on the 8525 does not create a conflict. A conflict is defined as a change to an item on both the PC and the PPC between syncs. An item is something like a calendar entry or a contact. If you have calendar entry for a dinner date and you change the location on the PC and the time on the PPC between sync's, that is a conflict. If you change Bob Smith's phone number on the PPC, and add a zip code to his address on the PC that is a conflict. You have flagged a change to the same item on both units.

Changing something on only one side in an item is not a conflict. You can even add whole new contacts, or make changes on the PPC and add new contacts and change others on the PC...those aren't conflicts.

Thanks, Sven. I knew there was no way what i describe could actually be a conflict, but you never know for sure. thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, i'm sorry we lost the choice to let us choose which of the conflicted items we want to be saved. i don't understand why that was removed.

with respect to my AS4.5 problem. i found a post somewhere (not in this forum) that said to delete the partnership both on the laptop and the 8525. then uninstall AS 4.5. Download and install AS 4.2, and go from there. i don't know why, but it worked. Seems to me that ActiveSync is one of the squirrliest programs out there--what works for one person often doesn't for another person; i.e., there are several different possible solutions for the same problem.

thanks for your help!
