The Ultimate range is a collection of high-end, sophisticated 3G Windows Mobile phones and PDAs in a selection of form factors to suit any user, the first of which will be available mid-year. The devices will be based on Windows Mobile 6, the latest version of Microsoft's mobile operating system. The Ultimate range consists of a collection of five devices in various form factors to suit individual preferences, from classic bar to PDA to a notebook replacement and was designed to provide the latest and best in phone and PDA technology. From the 530MHz processor, to the XGA direct video out, from HSDPA connectivity to the 262k colour VGA LCD touch screen, every component of each device is specified at a very high level. These are the first of a line-up of exciting devices i-mate will introduce through 2007."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20070213-ultimate1.jpg" /><br /><br />To make up for its phase of meager offerings, i-mate has announced the Ultimate series - a collection of five devices, each with a unique form factor and specs that would make any mobile geek weak at the knees. Inside (and outside), you'll find an Intel Bulverde 520MHz processor, 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, 802.11b/g/e/i Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, a 262K-colour VGA display, Mini-USB (v2.0 specification), a video-out port supporting 1024 x 768, a 2.0-megapixel camera, an FM radio, a microSD slot, and (takes a deep breath) Windows Mobile 6. That's right, folks; the O2 Xda Flame has competition. ;) <!><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20070213-ultimate2.jpg" /><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20070213-wey-20070213-ultimate3.jpg" /><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20070213-ultimate4.jpg" />

Great Googly Moogly!

It's 2:00 in the morning and this headline and story have roused me out of bed.. not so much for this device per se but for setting the bar so freakin' high! Yes, bring on the rich chocolately geeky goodness! More VGA, more memory, larger screen sizes... a chicken in every pot and a form factor for every geek!

2007 is gonna rock for the industry!

Yes, the giant is awake! This is a good news day. First Toshiba, then this. Albeit the form factor from the snaps could use some improvement (read butt-ugly), but the specs... OH THE SPECS!

The first one is ugly no doubt about it, but if they could come out with at least couple of nice designs, with quoted specs it would be awsome...

Sorry about that. It was poorly placed. But if it will make your day for that to be directed to you, then I'll accommodate. :D

Intel Bulverde 520MHz processor

So is there any sign on the horizon of chips faster than we have had for the last three years or so?

Clamshell with VGA, video out, 128/256, and wireless broadband? Come to daddy!

That's pretty close to a dream unit--though for good measure, I'd throw in one of the new Monahan processors, video chip, GPS receiver, and either a better card slot or a huge mess of internal flash. :devilboy:

Specs are great but form factor is in need of much inprovement. If you can put these specs in the body of a 6700 and add gps you'll have an almost perfect PPC.

GPS?

Not in the Ultimate, unfortunately. Still, for the specs, there's always BT GPS.

Bah.. Not an Ultimate device in my book with only 256 MB ROM. :evil:

This will be competing with the 4 &amp; 8 GB iPhone when release. Why the heck can't we get at least ONE WM phone with comparable memoery? :?:

Does the word "ugly" come to mind for anyone? ;)

Nice specs on some of iMate's upcoming devices, but it's all a bit like saying your blind date has a nice personality.

You can thank Inventec for that. These are the same folks that gave us the hideous JAQ, remember. The only thing remotely exciting about this device, for me, is the VGA display. Praise be to alah we're FINALLY seeing VGA displays on PPC phones, beyond the niche mini-laptop phone HTC Universal.

I dig the specs, but man...the design is atrocious. I hope it doesn't look that bad in person. It reminds me of the '70s, and that's just not all that cool. 8O

No that can't be right, Foo. Jim Morrison publicly stated that HE made the JAQ ugly because customers told him they wanted it that way.....are you sure....&lt;sarcasm>

As for VGA, there seem to be several devices coming out with it. It is really beginning to look like this is going to be an exciting year for WM devices....it's been a while.

It reminds me of a prop that might be seen from the 70's Buck Rogers TV series (http://www.buck-rogers.com/film_and_series). And that's DEFINITELY not cool.

This device is screaming for DVD rip of Tron to be played on it.

It is quite hideous.

here we go again...when will people be satisfied? i guess when they build a time machine? when will it end. i dont want to upgrade! why cant they make an all-in-one cf card with built in memory, like 4gb and bluetooth, gps, wifi, gsm, edge and any other connection add-on unit. i'd pay a couple hundred for it, no?

Yep, you can't please everybody... and when it comes to pocket pcs you can't please anybody. ;)

I think the specs are decent for me to procure one. But, I am interested in a screen at least 3.5" screen. I do not see that mentioned though.
Most of the other interesting devices announced earlier were though great but were only triband GSM and not useful in USA. But this one comes up to my needs but I do not know about screen :oops:

I'm pretty interested in the 1024x768 VGA output. This would've made the device a nice portable computer when equipped with a desktop monitor had they bothered to but in USB hosting for hookup of peripherals.

I've wanted a native version of this for a while. Makes mobile presentations a breeze too!

VGA Output?

320x240 = QVGA
640x480 = VGA
800x600 = SVGA
1024X768 = XVGA

So it should read: VGA screen, and XVGA output 8) :wink:

Anny way, nice specs on those devices 8)

VGA Output?

I think this has become a generic term for 'monitor out' regardless of supported resolutions.

Yup I know, but damn it's nice with a higher ressolution 8)

I'm fiddling with a VGA out, on a Qtek2020/SPV M1000/HTC Himalaya, and it's looking plain ugly on anny monnitor/projector. SVGA should be a minimum demand.
