I am the Utility Coordinator of a wastewater utility in Arkansas. We are currently attempting to replace a 275 page, 35 pound map book with a PDA. I have talked with ESRI and would like to attempt to build a viewer out of this type of PDA. I anticipate using a 2 Gb SD card.

This should cover by program, aerial photography, and the shapefiles that are required by our field personel.

Are there any hidden issues that I may not be considering, as far as additional devices? Should this iPaq support a 2 Gig card? What are some reviews of this device?

Hi,

The 4700 series should handle that pretty well. Having been a water and waste water facilities engineer for our county, I feel your pain! :) Also, knowing technicians' ablity to destroy equipment, you may want to consider either a ruggedized Pocket PC or at least a ruggedized case.

In time, you may want to link your GIS with GPS for locating facilities. I'm sure ESRI has already told you that they can add the ability for you to click on a facility on the map and be presented with text showing say: Pumps, how many, manufacturer, age, HP, last PM work, etc. It beats the heck our of paper for day to day collection system management.

Good luck with your project,

Bill

These will be used to replace the map book only. It is the most inexpensive way I have found to do it. There are no data collection opprotunities by the Collections Department, PM, or the Pump Crews. As the GIS Specialist, I will be the only person with data collection/alteration capabilities. We are looking a few different Trimble/ArcPad packages offered by ESRI for collection purposes.

Thanks for you input. It is really what I "wanted to hear." :D

Where did you work in wastewater? CMOM?
