having a hx2790 and pc with xp sp2 home edition
installed activesync 4.2 - deactivated firewall - enabled usb access in activesync - status not connected
when conencting the cradle with device - status connected - but partnership setup panel is never displayed - trying to explore - critical commun services have failed to start restart the device.
un-installed and re-installed activesync and never get the partnership setup screens. outlook is installed and working - device restarted
I have no idea anymore

Have you tried installing this update (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=215348&prodSeriesId=421420&swItem=PSG_I23454-108546&prodNameId=1128656&swEnvOID=2067&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=0)? It includes an ActiveSync Mode Switch utility, which allows you to switch to another connection type if the default doesn't work for you.

thanks for the info but
the install requires an active connection between pc and device and is exactly the problem..
