Various Cingular stores have started to receive a Treo demo unit. The case is identical to the Vodafone Treo 750, even in color. Only difference being the Cingy branding. This demo unit only means that the release will be soon but we still haven't heard a date yet, just the broad "Q4" time frame. Trust us when we know, you'll know! At least for now you get to enjoy some pics. Click on for the rest of them."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20061218-CingularTreo750.jpg" /><br /><br />I'm waiting for this unit to come out -- the lack of RAM in the 700w is getting to me, as is Verizon's insane tethering policies. The good news is it appears that it's well on its way to release, although there's still no release date.

Do you if this will ever see the light of day on Verizon's shelves?

No, as it's GSM. The 700wx, which is CDMA, is rumored to be appearing in January (as I think you're already aware. :)).

It's also showing up on Cingular's Business site, it's just a picture, but it looks like Cingular is getting ready.

The article mentions Verizon's tethering policies. Cingular's policy on tethering for Smartphones and PDA's appear to be the same (as they are not "DataConnect" plans).

Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, using Services: (i) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, continuous jpeg file transfers, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, automated functions or any other ?machine-to-machine applications; (ii) as substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections; (iii) for Voice over IP; (iv) in conjunction with WWAN or other applications or devices which aggregate usage from multiple sources prior to transmission; (V) Using the Services for any activity that adversely affects the ability of other people or systems to use either the Services or other parties' Internet-based resources including, but not limited to excessive consumption of network or system resources (whether intentional or unintentional) and "denial of service" (DoS) attacks against another network host or individual user; or (vi) Interference with or disruption of other network users, network services or network equipment. except for CONTENT formatted in accordance with cingular’s CONTENT standards, Unlimited plans cannot be used for uploading, downloading or streaming of video content (e.g. movies, TV), music or games.

Furthermore, unlimited plans (except for DataConnect and Blackberry Tethered) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/PDA-to-computer accessories, Bluetooth® or any other wireless technology) to laptops, PCs, or other equipment for any purpose.

You can tether all day long with a PocketPC phone and MediaNet $19.99 plan. I have a Cingular 8125 and do it all day long as do many others. They just tell you that you have to purchase the PDA connect plan to make more money, however they will sell you the equipment to use with MediaNet. You may just not be eligible for a cetain rebates, unless you sign up for PDA connet, then cancel it after you get the rebate.

Nope, Not so! At least, not per their licensing agreement.

MEdia Net
MEdia Net packages are not available on PDAs, RIM devices, or Laptop Modem Cards. MEdia Net packages are not intended for tethering. Cingular reserves the right to remove customers from MEdia Net packages for the use of a wireless device as an interface to other devices or networks, as determined by Cingular, including but not limited to device tethering.

Well, you are partially right....

Cingular knows many people use MediaNet for tethering and although they could remove you from the plan for doing it, I know of not one person they have donw this to. MediaNet packages are not "intended" (translated, they will not provide official support for it), but it does work very nicely! :D

You mean, do you -think- this will ever see the light day on Verizon? :) No.

I am not sure I agree with your translation of the Cingular TOS. I guess it is kinda like Verizon's V-Cast service. Tethering is a violation of their TOS, and one has to hope that they don't enforce it.

Use it wisely, then you are safe (not legal, just safe). Use it greedily, then you may be hosed.

Umm...ok, if you define getting MediaNet removed from your account "getting hosed."

Well, they may disable you from getting new data accounts, or impose a hefty bill, etc. Verizon has been to known to come down heavily on EVDO abusers. 3G eats up a lot of bandwidth.

Nowhere in Cingular's TOS does it state the possibility of getting billed, however as posted here already, it provides the possibility of MediaNet account getting removed from your account. There official policy is that they simply do not provide tethering support without PDA connect. This issue has been beat to death over in the Cingular PDA/Phones forum if you would like to read some of the many posts there. The fact is, out of all of Cingular's accounts, people who actually tether is minute. Granted, this will probably increase with the 3G rollout. 8)

Right. Your points are with merit, but I would like to just point out that Verizon only started cracking down bigtime after they rolled out EVDO. I, along with many others, tethered 1xRTT for years without problems. We'll see if Cingular changes their policy if the number of tetherers changes.

In any case: I would be perfectly willing to pay some additional $$ for tethering if it was necessary. In Verizon's case, I can't. Verizon offers no official tethering with the 700w, period. So, either I'm forced not to tether, or to do it in an unsupported and potentially-penalizable manner. :? That's what really gets me upset: Verizon would rather I buy a separate PC/ExpressCard for my laptop.

I, 2 coworkers, and 2 other friends, have tethered casually for ~2 years (2 of those people for 1.) I think if you use it like your primary ISP you're in trouble. I use it when the hotel internet service is down, and occasionally at the USAir hub in CLT for 1-2 hours.
