i'm getting kind of confused with this windows mobile interface. sometimes when i click on the OK button, it closes the app, vs putting it in background. i thought when its a check mark, OK means OK, and when there is a red X the OK will close/exit the app.

but when i'm in messaging, or resco file explorer, there's a red X at the top right corner. i press OK it returns me to the desktop but the app is still running in the background. why is it so inconsistant. or is it an app by app thing? when i tap the red X, it closes the app though.

You've lost me - since when does Windows Mobile have a 'red' X? Are you running any kind of task manager?

sorry, i guess its the wisbar skin i'm using that changes from a green check mark or a red X. i assume the green check mark means OK. and the red X means close. but that only applies when you actually tap that icon.

but if i use the OK button on the thumb keyboard, certain apps will actually close while other apps like messaging will just put it in background and return you to the today screen.

i tried looking in wisbar settings, but couldn't find anything about the OK button. not sure if its a wisbar thing, or maybe thats just how wm5 is.

By default, Wisbar closes the application when the x is tapped. But there are two exceptions to this rule - first, if 'smart minimize' is enabled, it will revert to the default WM5 behaviour (i.e. minimize rather than close), and second, you can also configure the x button to minimize on a tap'n'hold.

first of all, my 'smart minimize' is not enabled. and when i tap and hold, it closes/exits, not minimize.

but i think my original thing was i wanted to be able to not use the stylus so much. so i was wondering if the OK button on the thumbkeyboard could be used to exit apps instead of minimizing them.

I know this can be done through one of the hardware buttons, but I'm not sure about a keyboard. I have heard of an application that can be used to configure thumbboards, but I haven't got the link handy at the moment. I'll revisit this if I do find it.
