Alas, it's not cheap ($16.95), and doesn't support microphone input, but there's little choice elsewhere. :(

That adaptor is absolutely stupid! Why would they make an adaptor that sticks 1in straight out from the phone. A small miniUSB on one end connected to a female 3.5mm on a short cable would have been a much better idea.

Motorola makes such an adapter for their RAZR and SLVR phones (which have mini-USB for the all-in-one port). And I think that one does microphone as well as audio out. But of course it's also not cheap.

Headset adapter from Cingular store (http://www.cingular.com/cell-phone-service/accessory-details/?q_categoryid=&q_sku=sku1050328&_requestid=39276)

And doesn't work with the TyTn / Hermes / MDA Vario II....

I'm waiting for my Motorola SoundPilot to arrive so I can use my own earphones (B & O A6's) via Bluetooth

I gave up on looking for a good adapter for my TyTN so I got the SonyEricsson HBH-DS970 stereo bluetooth headphones. Great sound, and works flawlessly with the device.

for 16.95 I bought a soldering iron, solder, flux, and a 3.5mm jack, installed it just above microphone and now can use my earbuds on long flighs.

PS: ds970's rock!

Would be better than this solution

I'm probably overlooking something here...but why wouldn't you just plug in your headphones into the headphone socket that is already there?

Yes, it's 2.5mm but easier to find a 3.5-->2.5mm socket converter than messing with USB...or use that same soldering iron to replace the 2.5 mm jack with a 3.5

I'm probably overlooking something here...but why wouldn't you just plug in your headphones into the headphone socket that is already there? What you are overlooking is that some of the new phones don't have an earphone socket at all. The Smartflip/StrTrk only hasthe ext USB, and RAZR has only something similar as well (not a WM phone but still). They typically provide a headset, and some even a stereo one, but they generaly aren't the best quality, so a dumbass connector to normal connector adapter is needed if you want to use your $300 earbuds.

I find it especially irritating on the SmartFlip. That's because it actually has media control buttons on the outside when closed. They thought about it being used as a media player. How could they expect everyone to be happy with the provided headphones? An adapter should have come in the box.

I just ordered this not-so-cool adapter from MobilePlanet, but also ordered this (http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=140425) cool Y-cable. We might be talking "sledgehammer to crack a walnut" now, but I think this Y-cable will be a useful addition to my travel kit anyways.
