Both Geekzone and The Gadgeteer have reviewed the Palm Treo 750v, available through Vodafone in Europe and parts of the Asia-Pacific. For some countries, this is the first Windows Mobile-based Treo to be made available, so you no longer need to live in the US to sample some of that Palm/Microsoft love. This looks like a neat little device, and if you already have one and are looking for cases, check out Geekzone's review of the Vaja and Proporta cases here.

I managed to get my hands on a Treo 750v on Friday and after playing with it for a few days, think it is excellent (when compared to my O2 Mini S aka HTC Wizard).. The Palm enhancements make a huge difference and in particular it is truely a one handed use device...

The screen is OK if you can get updated versions of your software..

Screen resolution is a show stopper. I refuse to go to 240x240. Give us 480x480 and GPS plus SDIO. Take out useless cameras and put in a decent size battery and we are sold.

Screen resolution is a show stopper. I refuse to go to 240x240. Give us 480x480 and GPS plus SDIO.

The fact that it's square does more to dissuade me than the resolution itself. If this were widescreen (320x240) like the HTC Excalibur I would be far more temped. But having just reviewed the Treo 700wx, the screen res and overall size are really a turn-off. It's just too damn small to be usable. Windows Mobile doesn't scale well to this screen size and resolution. Compared to PalmOS running on the same exact display, at 320x320, Windows Mobile looks lilliputian in contrast.

Another show stopper for me, and this is going to sound nitpicky, is the rubberized coating. Such material has a nasty habit of peeling off after wear and tear. The Palm Zire 72 was notorious for developing this problem. I haven't seen the Treo 750v in person so I can't say for sure whether this is the same type of coating. If it is, I wouldn't touch the 750v...literally.

What annoys me is that it is not available in Australia!! Why is this in New Zealand first? (no offense to New Zealanders :D I have family in NZ)

Give it time. We'll definitely be seeing a Windows Mobile-based Treo before too long.

Hi guys...Been looking for info on the 750v. This is actually exactly the smartphone I need. A question however:
Assuming I import, this phone will obviously work on Cingular. However, he mentions that HSDPA can only be enabled by software. What exactly does this mean? Is it just a quick registry hack.

I'd like my next phone to have 3G support. The Treo 750v fits everything else perfect, but the HSDPA is confusing.

Thanks..

Rumour has it that a ROM upgrade will be available Q1 07 to add support for HSDPA.

What exactly does this mean?

Like PiatekHS has mentioned, a ROM update that enables HSDPA support is scheduled to be released in the near future. To clarify, it means the radio is already in the device. Quite a few of the recent HTC devices have followed a similar trend (OEMs have enabled/disabled HSDPA support as they saw fit).

I wish they would hurry up. I just sent my M600i in for service because of its terrible stability, so it would be great to be able to get rid of it and get the Treo when I get it back.

I thought you retired the M600i in favour of an 838 Pro?

I tried selling it on eBay and it didn't sell. I realised that I wouldn't be happy with the 838 Pro because I like to use my phone for one handed texting, something that the 838 Pro can't do. I also realised that WiFi really wasn't that important. I have unlimited email with 3, and 10MB data included every month, which I don't completely use, so WiFi really doesn't matter. I love the Treo's form factor, and I would have one (the Treo 650) except I moved to the 3G network, and the 650 didn't support 3G.

So, I am waiting for the 750v. Just hoping it is a bit cheaper than the 838 Pro.
