Perhaps it's because the manufacturers know the first thing many people do is discard included headphones, and thus they don't want to invest any significant money in the bundled headphones. Or, perhaps it's because quality headphones cost money (which would raise the cost of the overall product), and a good portion of the public doesn't know how good music can really sound with great headphones. Regardless of the reason why bundled headphones are usually of poor quality, if you're still using the standard headphones that came with your Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Smartphone, your music isn't sounding as good as it should."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20061025-ultimateears.jpg" /><br /><br />Our own Jason Dunn has put together a great review of the Ultimate Ears super.fi headphones over at The Two Inch View. As an audio junkie, I strongly believe that a good set of in-ears or cans is important for enhancing the music listening experience. These Ultimate Ears products seem to do just that.

I am looking for new headphones, of the noise cancelling variety, for plane trips and was wondering how these might compare to the Bose QuietComfort 3 headphones?

They are obviously different, physically but both are expensive.

Although I haven't tried the Ultimate Ears, I can attest to the value of in-ear earphones like these, and the improvement they give you in sound quality.

I have a set of in-ear phones by another manufacturer, and they work the same way to block ambient sound coming in around the earphones. This means less noise--the manufacturer says the method works better than electronic noise-cancelling headphones and earphones--which allows you to lower the volume (preserving your ears) and still hear great sound.

When I use my earphones, I often hear practically no outside sound... sometimes, all I hear are the thumps of my own footsteps on the ground! So whatever brand you get, make sure they are in-ear earphones with good, ear canal sealing rubber or foam heads (I like the foam best). Anything you listen to will sound better.
