Looking for a program that will let me send (perhaps receive?) text messages.

Those seem to sync with the phone. I was wondering if there was a program that would make my pda work as a stand alone text messaging unit (outgoing sms, incoming not needed).

None that I know of. You could try a web based text messaging service if you have an internet connection.

Some IM services such as ICQ also support the sending of text messages. However, if you really want SMS support, it's best to settle for a Phone Edition device.
