(HTC) CEO Peter Chou and Vodafone KK President and Representative Executive Officer Masayoshi Son signed a strategic collaboration agreement under which both parties will collaborate to develop and sell 3G PDA Phones in Japan. With this partnership, HTC, the world's leading provider of Microsoft® Windows Mobile® devices, will utilize its global experience to expand both companies' customer base and market share in Japan. By selling highly advanced 3G PDA Phones manufactured by HTC, Vodafone will gain a stronger foothold in the Japanese market."

HTC are really expanding their horizons. With this move they are having a go at Japan's mobile phone market, probably the most innovative in the world today (with the exception of South Korea). Vodafone aren't the biggest operator in Japan, but it could provide HTC a foothold to expand further. Windows Mobile isn't exactly a stranger to Japan, but greater availability will help adoption. More importantly, the pace of innovation should help along the development of new features and technologies that could eventually trickle down to the rest of us. The first HTC/Vodaphone offering will come in late 2006.
