I dont' own a pocket PC yet, but am interested in the inexpensive HP Ipaq 1955x because it has wireless internet.
When I'm at the sports bar watching the game (the bar has free wifi) I would like to be able to check my scores on the cbs.sportsline.com GAMECENTER, which I believe is mainly a Java application.
1) Is this even possible?
2) Is this the right pocket PC for the job
3) will I need the thunderhawk or some other additional browser to do this?
Thank you so much for any good responses!!!
Great forum you have here

You may be able to use NetFront, as it has a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), but I suspect the GameCenter applet is probably not practical to run on a Pocket PC.
Do note that ESPN, MLB, and the like have mobile sites, and they'll show you play-by-play updates, scoring plays, etc. It's not quite as interactive as GameCenter, but it's serviceable for a quick check or two.
As to the Pocket PC: it's okay, although one note of concern is the small amount of RAM (32MB), which is particularly of issue when doing things like playing Java applets. It may work for the average task, but you may want to look around and see if you can get a better unit for a similar price (perhaps the Axims?)

Interesting.
Gamecenter is mainly for fantasy football scoring.
So Pocket PC's aren't practical for this applet type of application, even if I were to get a better PC than the 1955?
That's too bad... I really wanted an alternative to lugging my laptop to the bar with me... the pocket pc seemed pretty cool.

I also thought about what you said about mobile versions of the site, and found this:

What kind of a phone or PC would I need to run this?

I have sprint currently, but am considering switching to cingular soon...
I wonder which of the recommended phones would be solid here?
I wonder how much data transfer would be used up on this with live scoring.

Well, this is a tricky question with respect to Pocket PCs or Smartphones, because I notice most of the phones listed are "regular" phones, presumably with J2ME. Several Pocket PC Phones have J2ME, but I don't know how well these applications would run on them.
