Does your phone often 'wait' on the 'Locating...' stage in Pocket IE? If you answered YES to these questions, then this may be the answer. I have been doing some testing / research on both T-Mobile AND Orange GPRS/EDGE/3G connections, and it appears that the DNS servers on both networks are rather slow to respond sometimes. Therefore, this tweak will change your DNS servers from the T-Mobile settings to the public free OpenNIC servers."</i><br /><br />If you're seeing very slow performance over your wireless data connection, it may be that your operator's DNS servers are dog-slow. While the article really starts out addressing T-Mobile and Orange users in Europe, there was one respondent who claimed to see faster speeds with his Cingular service here in the US. So read over the article as it steps through the process of updating your DNS settings (for both Pocket PC and SmartPhone devices) and be sure to double check the <a href="http://www.opennic.unrated.net/public_servers.html">OpenNIC Server Page</a> to find the most geographically-friendly DNS servers available (the addresses provided in the article assumes you're in Europe). Let us know how this works out!

I was having a terrible time with Cingular where i am.. I changed my DNS servers to the ones from where i work and Zoom! Much faster page lookups now. :)

I also tired using OpenDNS as well. The appeared very fast as well.. I actually have their primary DNS set as my secondary and my work DNS as my primary.

Hi, could some please tell me where in my GPRS settings I change the DNS for my device?

Also, is there a server in Australia I can try, preferably Melbourne, if not then Sydney?

Thanks

The answer to both of your questions is in the first post. The Modaco article tells you how to change the settings for PPC and Smartphone. The link to the OpenNIC Server Page gives you a listing of the servers, their locations and IP addresses.

For the past month or so I've noticed that the first time I tried to access a page in IE mobile on my sprint 6700 that it would fail stating the address was incoreect. Then after trying the link again it would work. So I just tried the opennic servers and things are much better. Right before I changed the setting I had an e-mail with a link that I clicked and all I got was "locating" for a over 5 seconds. After changing the dns I saw locating for umm maybe 0.5 seconds before the page loaded. I'll test it out some more but so far it seems to work well.

Oh... my... word! I have just changed from O2 to T-Mobile here in the UK in order to get a new Hermes and the all-you-can-eat data package and I was beginning to think I had made a serious mistake: Browsing via GPRS with the as-delivered T-Mobile setup was ridiculously slow compared with the equivalent O2 service, with about the same signal strength. In fact the O2 GPRS service is about as fast as the T-Mobile 3G service, which is plainly ludicrous! However, I've just updated the DNS addresses to the ones that Paul recommends in his edit, and the thing now flies. Relief!
