View Full Version : Tricky: trying to copy PPC databases from device *without* touchscreen (broken)

Hi,

My PPC (x51v) touchscreen broke. I have an application (Cash Organizer) that does not automatically synchronize, but instead requires a manual backup to a file now and then (which is synchronized). This means that I don't have a backup of the information I entered in this application since the last time I told it to write a backup file. Its information is stored in the Databases directory. I can see a folder with this name in my host PC, but cannot copy them, because they are not really files.

My question is, is there a way of making a backup of these databases from the host PC, without using the touchscreen?

Installing new software, like Sbp Backup, doesn't seem like an option because I cannot click on the screen to authorize the installation (unless there is a way of doing it with the device's buttons).

Any help appreciated!

PS: Just for the record, Cash Organizer does have a sync option that has to be installed separately and that I didn't know about before.

Unfortunately, without an application completely supporting D-pads, there's no easy way to navigate around.

Your best bet would be to get the touchscreen replaced. It's not cheap, but it'll breathe new life into your device, which at the moment, sounds half-functional. Check out what <A HREF=http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~Dell_Axim_X51v-509~area~repairs.htm" target="_blank">Pocket PC Techs</A> has to offer.

Thanks.

Sure, I intend to replace the touchscreen. I would say that without it the device is much less than half-functional, it is basically worthless.

The thing is that during repair they have to remove the battery and all data is lost, so I need to preserve a backup somehow.

Thanks again,

Rodrigo

Have you tried SOTI Pocket Controller... You can control your pocket pc from the host PC... I have faced the same problem before when the screen of my Ipaq broke and i need some information from the Pocket PC... Give it a try....

A cheaper (free!) option is the ActiveSync Remote Display (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=74473fd6-1dcc-47aa-ab28-6a2b006edfe9&amp;DisplayLang=en), part of the Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys. It needs Activesync though.

There is a program that lets you use your d pad as a mouse.
I don't think this one is the one I used, but give it a shot.

Yes, there are several apps like that; see http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&amp;p=164&amp;more=1&amp;c=1&amp;tb=1&amp;pb=1

Just as a follow up, MyMobileR allows you to control your PPC from the host, also allowing keyboard and mouse. The mouse goes from the host screen to the mobile screen just like when you have an auxiliary display. Great program!

Here's what it does, from its home page Windows Mobile - My Mobile (http://www.mtux.com/):

* View your mobile screen on your desktop.
* Control your mobile by using desktop keyboard and mouse.
* Copy/Cut/Paste text between mobile and desktop.
* Capture mobile screen.
* Drag and drop files to your mobile.
* Support ActiveSync / IP Connection
* Support Mobile Explorer (File Browse)
