Okay, I'll admit it, I've neglected my PDA a bit as of late, and went a few months without using it much. This was due to it being left at a friend's house and me being unable to retrieve it. So, the battery had drained completely, but I was able to charge it up and use it again. I upgraded my WM5 install to the latest one available by HP back at the beginning of the month. I ran through Menneisyys tweaks (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=48816&highlight=hx4700+tweak) and found myself loving WM5 more than ever.

However, it took me a week or two to realize something is amiss: when I hit the Power button to put the device into Suspend/Sleep mode and leave it "Off" for more than half an hour or so, I'm unable to use the Power button to wake up the device. To boot my device, I either have to hit the Reset button, or unlock the battery and re-lock it, effectively removing the battery. I have Button Lock enabled, but no case for my PDA currently, so it is just residing in a clean pocket with the screen cover over the touchscreen.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem, where the PDA won't wake up out of suspend mode? My battery isn't being depleted, I can reset and continue to use the device as normal. But the boot time from a reset is a bit long to be able to use the device. Any hope from anyone?

Not owning a hx4700, I'm not sure if it's a known bug. However, Menneisyys has turned the Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the hx4700 inside out, so if there's a suspend-related problem with it, I'm sure he'll chime in here soon enough.

But two things you may want to try/check.

First, download and install the latest Windows Mobile 5.0 ROM update (http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/23729.html), if you haven't already.

Second, check to see you don't have any third-party applications interfering with the device's operations.

Whoops, I meant at the end of last month - I downloaded the latest update 7/31/06, and I'm currently running revision 2.01 on my PDA.

I'll try a hard reset later on to see if somehow some software I'm using is causing the issue, but I'm only using a few applications, none which should be power or display related.

Thanks for the help so far :D

Well, no success thus far finding a solution. It's become an annoyance, as I often have to wait a minute to use my PDA from a dead standstill, but it's not something that I'd consider replacing my PDA for. Anyone else have a similar issue with PDAs like this?

I have had a similar problem with my 4700. I am currently using the latest WM5 bios, but he problem has been there since I purchased the product. Here is what I have found. . .

My device actually comes out of suspend mode, but the backlight does not come on unless I soft boot pull the battery. I can tell the device is on by holding the screen up to a light.

What I have found is that if I press the power button it wakes up the device (at least most of the time). Then if I hold the power button down for an extended period of time the backlight will come on!

I hope this helps. It isn't really the way I expect the thing to work, but I would never give up the 4700 even if this is a bug.

The hold-the-power-button trick is default behaviour in Windows Mobile for toggling the backlight. Sounds like your device is coming on with the backlight off. Have you upgraded the ROM to the latest WM5 version released by HP? That might help.
