Greetings all:

I tried searching but couldn't come up with narrow enough search terms.

I am looking for an alternative (non MS) to Outlook 2002 that came with my Hx2790. I don't need to sync mail, but need all the rest. I am switching from a Palm M515 and would be happy to find an equivalent to their desktop app. for WM5.

So far, Pocket Informant seems to be the best fit for me on the PPC but to my knowledge there is no desktop equivalent app.

My problem is that my employer dosen't use Outlook and I can't seem to keep Outlook from interfering with mail operations! No suprise there!

We are using GroupWise 6.5 for mail but that won't work with WM5.0 / AS4. I think GW7 client will but I can't wait. As an indicator of how fast our IT department moves, they are still tied to 3270 emulation for our most critical operations! They have been trying to move to a more capable platform for more than 10 years and we really need the capabilities available in newer systems! As I said, I can't wait.

Thanks for any help,

Peter

Activesync won't work with anything but Outlook. That said, you can get other sync programs (they work through Activesync) that will allow you to use other PIMs like Lotus Notes - that's the only one I'm absolutely sure of.

Unfortunately, that presumes that (1) you're willing to plop down the cash for Lotus Notes, (2) plop down further cash for the sync program(s); and (3) live with the bugginess and instability of the alternative sync process. For all their faults, the Outlook-Activesync combo is still the most viable way to sync your PIM info. Sorry, but that doesn't seem to help you out in any way.

There is no reason you could not use Outlook only as a PIM and Groupwise for email.

You might also be able to use Outlook as your Groupwise Client.

If you google "Outlook and Groupwise" (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-44,GGLD:en&q=outlook+and+groupwise) you will find many useful links.

Here are a few I found that look like they might be helpful.

Thanks very much Mark!

Your links were most helpful. Based on them, I have been able to get outlook's 'nose' out of my e-mail and that was the biggest thing.

Now to deal with the way notes are transfered to the hpc. It appears that some notes are transfered ok (without regard to categories I think) but most small ones -for example:

ADD PUBS
DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION
EFFEXOR CYCLOZENE
NOEPERIN
VENLOFEXI

old meds
DESEPRIMINE
CYLERT
RITALIN
KLONOPIN

WWW.ADDMED. DR ANTHONY LAWS

Isn't transfered ok.
The first line appears as the file name and when the file is opened, it is empty. In outlook these notes appear intact.

Any ideas?

Again, Thanks for the time you took to prepare a most helpful response.

Regards,

Peter
