View Full Version : Another 'Man Law' Needed - for Mobile Geeks & Bags?

CnetNews.com is reporting that belt clips are out for our PDAs, smartphones and the rest - and 'manbags' are in.

That's reminded me of the Miller Lite Man Law ads, and made me wonder whether we need a new Man Law on how to refer to these bags. Have done a short blog post on this subject, at:

Interested to hear others' thoughts on this ...

"Man Bag?!?!?" NO WAY!!

If you absolutely HAVE to carry a bag, I'd vote for "gear bag." The term "gadget bag" seems to imply that what's inside are nothing but toys.

Still, I try to carry everything I need in the pockets of my cargo shorts. Of course, when more space is required, I go for the tried-and-true ScottEVest!!!

I'm so jealous.

(And I have to find new cargo shorts. My favorite pair (which had pockets for everything I could think to carry and didn't look like it) has a tear in not such a good place. It was one of those items of clothing you'd make up excuses to do laundry for just so you could wear them again. *sigh*)

Cool - Gear Bag seems about right to me - and man - totally know the feeling on the articles of clothing that you grow (very) attached to and no matter how many holes etc, they cannot be taken out of circulation ...

But, are we at least all unified on the point that hanging devices on your belt is no longer cool or acceptable? I remember years ago seeing Dale Coffing giving demos of multiple devices at a conference and he had five or six Pocket PCs on his belt; he looked like Batman. §;{›>

Guess those days are gone...

I never really managed to get into the belt clip usage. Have always tended to just carry in a pocket - very easy to do with the Cingular 8125 or Treo, not so great but still manageable with an Axim.

Yeah, right. I'm going to take my fashion advice from CNet.

I wonder what the purse makers paid CNet to print that "news".

R@dimus is right: Gear bags, man bags, whatever you want to call 'em, are also OUT. Auf Wiedersehen! Devices are all small enough to fit into pockets now... pockets are IN!

Also, cargo pants are now cool for adults. But hidden pocket trousers are better!

And of course, if you're seriously overweight, you look lousy in all of the above, and all bets are off.

I don't know, there are times when a good belt-clipped case is a godsend, especially at formal business events where a black leather belt clipped case below a suit jacket is way more acceptable than black cargo pants or a bulge from an overfilled pocket.

and who doesn't want to look like Batman???

Besides, the point of Pocket PC's is that the fit in your pocket. I carry a PPC precisely so I have no need to carry a seperate organizer, music player, video player, wireless internet device, ebook reader, etc. Hence, I need no "purse". Yeah, you make some compromises but being able to do all of that with one device I can slip into a pocket is well worth it.

Sure, everyone wants to look like Batman (I'd KILL for those abs, yo!). But only when I'm wearing my black body armor with matching combat boots and ninja gloves, shatterproof bat-eared helmet and electro-rigid glide-effect cape.

When I'm a dashing millionaire playboy man-about-town, I want devices that slip unobtrusively into my tux and don't spoil the seams (or upset the French supermodels swimming in the fountain). And I don't know about you, but my PPC is a lot more svelte than my cellphone (until I spring for a Razor, I guess). Or for that matter, my wallet and my keys.

I have two solutions to this problem:

Solution #1 (http://www.imate.com/t-DETAILS_JAMIN.aspx)

Solution #2 (http://www.koyono.com/products/slimmy/description.html)

And I'll present a third solution, although this one isn't as "necessary": Solution #3 (http://www.spacepen.com/cdn-english/catalog/1004/cat_1005.htm)

Forget the pen, you'd need a bag for that!

Although, I don't like the stylus as well as the one that comes w/ my i730, the idea is OK.

I have the matte black pen/stylus combo and think it's great! It's a nice, compact size and clips to my SENA case, plus it looks a lot more professional than most combo-types.

Great minds think alike. ;)
