This is a firmware question so I posted here. Is it possible to update the infra-red system of an iPAQ 2215 without doing an OS upgrade? I have a new IBM X41 TabletPC that will not recognize the IR from my 2215 or a Toshiba e750. IR is activated on PC and handhelds. Thanks.

Are you sure the 2215 has ever received any IR-specific upgrade? It was a BT upgrade (to fix the incompatibility problems with secure BT phones like the Nokia 6230) that it received as a stand-alone upgrade, not a IR one. I don't recall the 1.10 ROM having any IR-specific update either.

BTW, I too have a Thinkpad (an a31p; that is, only some 2 years before the x41 and, therefore, most probably with a very similar FIR unit); will test this stuff with it and my 2215. I've already noticed it does have IR problems with my Pocket PC's (not only the 2215), but never had the time to really investigate it.

I'm still using the stock OS on my 2215. I've tweaked the heck out of everything else but I just don't do OS upgragdes (and my units have never hard-crashed). I just left an IBM T30 laptop with which my PPC IR'd fine. The new X41 TabPC just doesn't see the IR coming from two WM2003 PPCs. And I do know where the IR port is on the laptop. :-)

That is, still 1.0.x, not 1.10.x? (Later 2210's may have been shipped with the latter.)

It's possible it's just a DLL. Will soon post my results on the compatibility - I'm just doing some serious backup on my Thinkpad (just upgrading it with a new Samsung 120G HDD.)

Tested PPC -> ThinkPad sending on several of my other Pocket PC and Palm OS devices (3660, 2210 with 1.10, the FIR hx4700 (this means the problem are not related to being FIR vs SIR), Tungsten T|3, x51v). None of them worked.

The x30 also has FIR (as with the a31p and the x41). Did you install any specific IR driver on it to communicate with Pocket PC's?

No we're issued very locked-down corporate laptops with no install capabilities. It's odd to find any settings option not grayed out. I'm amazed they let us choose our own wallpaper on the desktop. I celebrate by changing the speaker volume control now and then.

At the 'About' screen: MS PPC Version 4.20.0 (Build 14053). Anywhere else I should look for OS version?

EDIT:
Version: Prod. Revision Level: B01
ROM Revision: 1.10.07 ENG
OS Version: WinCE 4.20

Mine is A01 (HW; older than yours - bought the 2210 right after its release) / 1.10.07 ENG (the latest upgrade).

This means you can't further upgrade your 2210.

Mine's a 2215. Does that matter?

Nope - the different designations describe the HP's sales channel (corporate or retail), and has nothing to do with the device itself.
