Samsung: Having Fun with Displays

The first is a <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060604/tc_afp/skoreaitsamsungdisplay">4.3" active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display</a>, which Samsung claims has the "world's highest definition". Come on, Samsung - give us some figures. ;) The second, and a little more down to earth, is a <a href="http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-11867-Hybrid+Touch+Screen+Panel+from+Samsung.html">3.5" QVGA hybrid touch screen panel</a> that incorporates the PCB into the screen to allow manufacturers to deliver thinner and lighter devices to the market. Schweet.

A saw this article on EETimes (http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/rss/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=188701521).

They claim it's 480x272, and that it's the world's highest resolution 3D display panel.

"The AMOLED 3D display provides high-resolution stereoscopic images at a processing rate of 120 Hz, more than two times faster than existing 3D displays, Samsung said."

If you know how to view stereograms, you can see an example here (http://www.3dexpo.com/what.htm). Personally, I doubt that 3D displays will ever take off, but you never know, you know?

This is obviously using lenticular technology, which means that without the lenticular overlay the 2D resolution is 480x544 (272*2).

3D actually makes more sense for PDAs than for just about anything else simply because it is easy to keep your eyes at the correct angle to view the 3D image. The problem with monitors is that you have to move your head to resolve the 3D depth, but with a PDA all you have to do is tilt the PDA ever so slightly to acheive the same effect. So easy that I'm sure you'd do it intuitively without even noticing it.

So it will be huge. Count on it.
