In Fitaly 4, you'll find visual improvements for VGA devices, powerful macro expansions (extended functionality delivered through user-customised slides), and Windows Mobile 5.0 support. You'll also get the usual bag of goodies - like side bars, letter panels, number panels, punctuation panels, accent and arrow keys, and more.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2006/20060501-fitalyrc1.gif" /><br /><br />Great news for all Fitaly 3.5 users: Fitaly 4 is a free upgrade as it uses the same registration code. For everyone else, there is a special upgrade offer of $15 if you use an older version, and a special introductory offer of $25 if you're new to the SIP.<br /><br />Do give this a trial run. In my opinion, it's miles ahead of the default on-screen keyboard included in Windows Mobile.

Well, as usual the upgrade experience on Windows Mobile 5 is worse than trying to remove an application from Windows 3.1.

If you have Fitaly 3.x or one of the release candidates, betas, you might give this a shot.

• Go into the Fitaly options and change the default keyboard to "Keyboard."
• Soft Reset
• Go to Start|Settings|System|Remove Programs and uninstall Fitaly. It may be listed as Textware Solutions Fitaly.

Now, if that worked cool. You are one of the fortunate. Soft reset again and proceed with the install of 4.0.

If, like me, the uninstall fails, before hitting soft reset do the following. Now, advanced warning here because Fitaly inserts itself during the boot, this could render your device unbootable if there is something left on your device that I don't list below because it wasn't on mine. I used Resco Explorer to help with this. Make sure you can see all hidden and system files and files in ROM. You will need a registry editor too. Resco includes one and there are freebies available. You should be able to perform the file operations, with the exception of the Find operation, with the default WM5 File Explorer as long as you can see hidden/system files.

• Manually remove the 3 FITALY* folders in \windows.
• Delete all fitaly* files in \windows - 7 of them I think
• Remove the HKCU\Software\Textware solutions registry key
• Remove the HKR\CLSID\{95BDB641-772F-11d2-AC6B-204C4F4F5020} key
• Remove the HKLM\Software\Apps\Textware Fitaly key
• Remove the \windows\AppMgr\Textware Fitaly folder
• Remove the \windows\help\fitaly.lnk file
• Remove the \windows\startup\fitalystartup.exe file
• Using Resco File Explorer, go to the root of your device and search for *fitaly* and *textw* on the entire device to make sure there are no Fitaly and Textware files.
• Using a good registry tool, like Resco's Registry addin, search for fitaly and textware in the registry. Make sure you search data, keys and values.

Once done, soft reset again. This is the key. If your device boots, and it should, you should be able to upgrade.

Note: If you get a "Fitaly has been successfully installed on your device..." but the blue dots at the top of the screen do NOT fill up the progress bar entirely, then the install did not install successfully and you should go back to the top of this post and start over.

After all of that, for some reason it came up in VGA mode on my tiny K-Jam QVGA screen. Just go into optioins and tell it to dispaly "Small"

As much as a colossal hassle as this is, Fitaly is definitely worth it. 4.0 is amazing compared to 3.5. The "preview" feature when you slide north rocks. It is just too bad the application manager that Windows Mobile 5 comes with is vying for top suckiest feature, and I think it is a nose ahead of Connection Manager in this hotly contested race.

Thanks very much for the heads up on this, Ed. I'll give this a whirl this pm.

As Ed says, I'm sure it will be worth it. Fitaly is a phenomenal app for PocketPCs. I had been quite frustrated trying to use v3.5 on my K-JAM - the small stability problems were annoying just because I have become so dependent on the great features in Fitaly. This new version seems even better.

I wonder if we can persuade Jean to take another look at doing Fitaly for Tablet PCs. He had a test version a couple of years ago but dropped it. I for one would love to see it back again.

I dunno which version of fitaly I'm currently using on my WM5 handheld, and I don't care.

It works. It's wonderful. It's stable.

Can't believe the steps necessary for some to install it.... I'm not even taking a risk there. :)

Have you looked at the Tablet PC Forum lately:

We should have a Fitaly for the Tablet PC very soon and it will look very much like the one on the Pocket PC.

PJE provides a direct link. In addition, there's a link at the bottom of the Fitaly forum post that says "Download Fitaly 4". Hard to miss it. :)

I'm having the same problem. Not hard to miss there just simply is NO download link when viewing on my Cingular 8125 with PIE. All I get is a blank page....

Hmm, I was going to check for you, but it appears the Fitaly site is down. When it's back up, I'll let you know if it appears in IE Mobile.

8O I just realized it's been over three months since I last purchased software for a mobile device. That's a new record for me, by a factor of at least two!

Anyway, I have Fitaly 3 installed, but only because I have a WM2003 device and it complains when you try to install Fitaly 3.5 on it. Would I still be eligible for the free upgrade? I won it after v3.5 was released.

And I see no actual mention of WM2003 on the Fitaly site - does v4 even work with WM2003?

The download is apparently both the trial and the full software. And it does mention that it's for WM2003SE and WM5 - though the manual appears to have found a new WM version: Fitaly 4, shown on the left, is the latest version of Fitaly for WM5 and Windows SE 2300.!

Okay, I checked the page in IE Mobile and the download link definitely appears. You're not using any sort of IE plug-ins, are you?

I doubt it, but if I were you, I'd send Jean a PM just to make sure.

I tested it in WM2003 and it works perfectly. Download the WM2003SE version and install it, then if Fitaly appears oversized (VGA version) on your screen, go to the Visual tab in the Fitaly options and change the keyboard size to Small. It should then switch to the QVGA version.

Right. Entering a valid registration code will take away the time limitation (thus, turning it into the full version).

I was more worried about Windows Mobile 5000 on the download screen. And more importantly, whether there would be a real close (X) button in it. 8)

Hey, PJE:

Ummm, is anyone else getting this? I went to go purchase an upgrade and even though the online form says $15, when you enter a one in the unit field, the total amount comes up $20.

I checked the other options and their auto-prices match the stated prices. It's only the upgrade that seems to have the hidden $5 surcharge.

What's up with that? "Download protection" fever starting to spread???

I'm gonna try typing in $15 in that spot and see if the server will accept it.

----------------------------------------------

Well, I can't tell if it was processed or not. Just have to wait for the email I guess.

A couple of worrying things about buying through the site though:
The response screen promised me that my order would be mailed to me as quickly as possible using the method I selected. This is odd as I (a) am only ordering a reg code so don't really need anything mailed to me and so (b) was never given the option of selecting a preferred delivery method.

Also, you might want to take a look at this. After placing the order I noticed the padlock icon on the page was in the 'open' position. Clicking on it brought up this message:

Opera has classified the connection to the server fitaly.securesites.com as insecure.

The server fitaly.securesites.com has identified itself with an electronic certificate. The certificate is signed and verified by an issuer that is on this browser's list of trusted authorities.
I know I'll sleep well tonight.

Uninstall of Fitaly 3.5 on a WM5 K-JAM did not proceed fully, as you suggested Ed. However, I simply removed all files as you suggested but did not touch the Registry entries (did not have a Reg Editor with me at the time). The Fitaly 4 install proceeded without a hitch and seems to be running fine. Furthermore, my previous customisations were preserved and I did not have to re-register Fitaly4 - the old licence key was recognised automaticallly. Great.

I have now played with it quite extensively. Seems to be faster and more cleanly responsive on the K-JAM than v3.5 was. No lockups. And I love the new extended macros and more powerful sliding options. This is a brilliant upgrade for experienced Fitaly users. Highly recommended.

Could be an issue with Opera. IE6.01 shows it locked and that the cert isn't for fitaly.securesites.com but for *.securesites.com and is valid for another 18 months or so.

It also could be the final acknowledgement page, which should have no secure info on it, isn't set up correctly on the server, but shouldn't cause a problem with data being stolen.

I'm running the demo on a WM2003 device, and the + (add expansion) button does not bring up the corresponding window that Fitaly 3 did. Is this a "feature" across all devices, or due to the fact that I'm running it on a non-supported OS?

It works fine with WM2003 - V4 replaces the word completion lists with custom slides! Check this - http://fitaly.com/winmobile/fitaly4%20options%20slides.htm#customslides
