Probably the best and no doubt by far the fastest Pocket PC Web browser, Opera Mobile, is finally out!

It has just been released and is available at
http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/

Expect a thorough review, benchmark and comparison to alternative solutions really soon :)

It works nicely so far, but you cannot configure the location of the cache, it insists on using Main Memory. This is awkward when you don't have any main memory left!

How soon is soon? You see, I've got this front page post queued up to appear in an hour, and would love to link to your review if it's ready before then. ;)

If you have Memmaid installed, set the user folder 2 to the Opera cache i.e. \Application Data\Opera\Cache4 and check the option for folder 2 under the cleaner. It won't move the cache for you but it will help you maintain it and clear out temp files that Opera uses keeping the max amount of ram available.

There is a way to move the cache:

Today probably - I'm still hard-testing the stuff to see whether it has some bugs and to compare its speed to the alternate browsers.

Thanks for the link offer :)

Yes, the biggest problem with Opera Mobile is still the lack of GUI-based support for .ini configuration. You still need to manually "hack" the config files to do a lot of stuff like overriding the default scroll mode (see tutorial here (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=547&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)).

I downloaded the 30 day trial, set it as my default browser and opened my RSS feeds on Newsbreak. Whenever I tried to "read more online", Opera wouldn't open and I would get an error message (PIE worked, as usual). I certainly hope there is an easy fix for this.

Hi,

What's the error message you are getting? I ask because opera will work with NewsBreak. Typically the problem you've described comes up when Opera still isn't set as the default browser.

It sounds like you already did that though so knowing the error might help!

It's not related to NewsBreak but the same bug as described at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=here_s_a_fix_for_the_flaky_file_associat&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 . I'll publish a fix quickly.

OK, just import this registry file (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062006Opera86/OperaStorageCard.reg) after changing all occurrences of "SD Card" to the name of your storage card. Also, if you have a pre-WM5 device, make sure you change \\Program Files\\Opera to the directory name of Opera on yoru storage card.

I downloaded Opera to the File Store so I probably have the same file location problem that you would get if it were on a card as you described at your website.

Yeah, just do a an all-search-and-replace in the provided regfile and import it.

BTW, I've mentioned several times how good the JavaScript support in Opera Mobile is (standards compliance is THE killer point in Opera Mobile, in addition to pure speed). Yes, even gmail autocomplete works, as can be seen in here:

http://www.winmobiletech.com/062006Opera86/OperaMob86AddressAutocompleteWorks.bmp.png

(Please note that you will need to enter one letter more and, then, delete the last letter with the Backspace key for this to work. Otherwise, it works flawlessly.)

I tried the registry fix but couldn't get it to work, Opera still won't open as the default browser when I'm using Newsbreak. I changed the file path to "Ipaq file store/opera software opera/opera.exe". That's the path that I see if I find the .exe file using Resco Explorer. Obviously I'm doing something wrong.
I suppose if I relocated Opera to main memory, it might work better, but I'd rather do that as a last resort.

Are you sure you used double backslash characters instead of / ?

Sorry for sounding a bit basic but when you say "double" is this what you mean ?
\\ipaq file store\\opera software opera\\opera.exe ?

BTW, I've just posted my thoughts on the difference between the new NetFront and Opera here (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=870&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1).

Note that it's NOT an one-on-one review & comparison but a bird's view comparison.

I've also collected the links to the most informative Opera Mobile threads in there.

Small tip for those trying to use PIE to download and install the .cab directly to their Smartphones:

My Opera beta expired a few days ago, and I saw the official release this morning. I will not be returning home until Sunday, so I figured I'd download the .cab and install directly onto my XV6700 (EV-DO ftw!)

If you want to do this, select the official Opera HTTP download site as the source for your .cab. All the alternate sites are ftp, and will load up a page of text (the actual .cab file code). the only one that worked for me was the Opera HTTP source.

This is the first time I have tried to import a registry file. Can someone help me step by step so I can use newsbreak and opera?

Thanks in advance,
Becca

Copy the RG file to the \My Documents directory of your PPC. Start Resco RegEd, go to Menu/Import and select the regfile. It will be imported. Let me know if the import doesn't succeed.

After that, suspend yoir device and resume it so that the changs are flushed back to the registry.

Also note that the same problem is discussed at http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=126877

Or you can simply delete Opera and reinstall it into your main memory...then it runs Newsbreak perfectly.

I have soft reset the device and I still get the error. What am I doing wrong?

I finally went back to the original message about changing SD to storage. I did that, soft reset and it works now!

Thanks for your help,
Becca

Ok so I installed Opera and i have to say, it is a very nice browser; however, it is missing one HUGE IMPORTANT CRITICAL THING!!!!!! I have been playing around with it for the past hour and I have noticed that it does not have support for copying and pasting pictures or even downloading pictures, unlike PIE. This is a very big flaw. Maybe there is a trick or setting i do not know about but if somebody does know how to save pictures, please let me know. I really like this browser apart from the inability of saving pictures. If you hold your stylus on a picture, there are no possibilities to save it. Also, you cannot highlight or select a picture. Big downfall for a great browser.

I’ve written a tutorial to help the situation. Check out this (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=879&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1).
