OK. Earlier in the week I noticed that the SD card (SanDisk 512 MB) I always keep in my HP hx2755 was blank. All 300+ MB of data I had stored on it was gone. Seemingly for no reason. Looking closer I see that (acording to the Memory applet) that it has 324.39 MB in use, and 159.17 MB free. So it appears that the data is still there, but the FAT (or whatever) has been lost.

Does anyone know of a good and cheap way to recover the hidden data?

Also, is this a freak event, or has anyone seen this before? I'm not familiar with this happening to anyone before.

I've seen it before several times with both SD cards and CF cards. In one case, my device was able to see the files again after a soft reset.

You might consider trying the card on a desktop and transferring/backing up any files you can find, then reformat the card. It also might be time to get another card.

same thing happen to my sd card... lost 750megs of data...but i think i had most items backed up. welcome to windows mobile... where dumb things like this happen. actually it happen again after saving everything only a week after. i decided to hard reset and start fresh... have no clue what caused it and since then it has not happened, but remember to back up all data. also try something like pocket mechanic to format the card. i noticed that with the desktop format tool, it still caused this thing, i think. really confusing problem. search other forums if it happens again and to recover lost data.

You might want to reference these threads for reasons and possible solutions (you are not alone!):

However, any data recovery methods really won't help if you've written any data in the meanwhile - so keep that card safely out of your PDA until you decide on what options to take.
