ActiveSync via Bluetooth

Okay, maybe you ppc gurus can solve this mystery. I've installed AS 4.1 and, via USB, can sync up. But nothing appears when I click on AS's Explore icon, just an empty window with the message at the lower left saying, "0 objects". On the flip side, when I sync up via Bluetooth, everything is normal - all objects show when I click on the Explore window, and I can Add/Remove programs (which I cannot do via USB). To try to resolve this, I have uninstalled and re-installed AS two or three times, to no avail.
One difference I have noticed between the two avenues is that through Bluetooth, I have the option to disconnect from AS; whereas through USB, I don't.

Is there something I'm missing?

My device is a HP hx2495 running WM5.

Have I stumped everyone? :?:
Since having this issue, the only way I've been able to load any programs onto my ppc is to move the CAB file onto my SD or CF card via a card reader and then run the CAB file.

Is there a WM5 or AS (not beta) upgrade that I need? And could those upgrades be loaded via BT?

What other ideas might there be to resolve this issue?

And don't say go back to a non-WM5 ppc. I've already thought of that but it isn't an option. :!:
