As a Mac user with an iPod, I've been avoiding stores selling WMAs with DRM, mostly because I can't really use them with my setup, but also because it seems more problematic than iTunes DRM anyway. But the truth is that, occasionally, a WMA store will have a track that you just can't get anywhere else (legally).
I have Virtual PC running Windows XP, but it does not run fast enough for music playback in Windows Media Player (though Windows iTunes works well, oddly enough). I have always thought that my iPaq 1940 with WM2003+ WMP9 lacked sufficient DRM support to send the tracks over and play them there.
Recently, I discovered that Pocket Player now says it can support WMAs with DRM, even on devices without built-in support for it. I bought the program, and I can sync it with Virtual PC, and the tracks work very well on my PPC!
However... then I tried the protected track under WMP9 on my iPaq, and it worked there too! The file still doesn't work on WMP9 for Mac OS X, so it is definitely a protected file without any hacking or cracking.
I can only think of two possibilities:
1) My iPaq 1940 actually did support WMA DRM all along, which is good news except that the $17 for Pocket Player was a bit of a waste, OR
2) Installing Pocket Player added components that enabled WMP to play back protected content too...?
Although I'm always glad to have an issue where something works better than I expected, rather than worse, can anyone explain this? Pretty pleeeeease? Thanks!
