I just bought the MDA a few days ago, and I've tried to download a few programs that were supposed to compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0, including Agiel Messenger, but when I click on the application that I just downloaded it pops up an error saying it is not a valid pocket pc application. I am downloading the programs from the MDA on to the MDA. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Kim

Welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts.

It sounds like you're trying to execute desktop installers on your mobile device, which can't be done. What you'll want to do is move those files on to a PC, then with your device connected to the PC via ActiveSync, run those installers and let ActiveSync copy and install the relevant applications on to your device.

An alternative solution would be to browse around each developer's site for a local device installer (usually released as a CAB file). These can be executed on your Pocket PC, from within File Explorer. Unfortunately, not all developers release these, so the desktop installer would remain the easiest option.

Thanks for the reply. I figured I was doing something wrong. I didn't know that you couldn't install directly from the MDA.

I also tried downloading and saving some mpeg files again from the mda itself. However they don't seem to save with a file extension, so I can't get windows media to play them. It just says there is no program associated with the file. Do I have to put files like that on my pc first as well, and then use activesync to put them on the mda?

Thanks again,

Kim

No, you don't have to. They might not appear to have a file extension because File Explorer doesn't actively show it.

If you want to get those MPEGs playing, try a third-party player such as TCPMP. It's unbeatable. :)

Visit http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/

Download "tcpmp.pocketpc.0.72RC1.cab" and you can install that one locally on the device. If not, download "tcpmp.pocketpc.0.72RC1.exe" and execute that one on your PC.

Thanks again! That worked perfectly! I'm really new to this pocket pc thing. I used to have the sidekick 2. I'm still in the two week trial period with the mda, and am still deciding if I want to keep it. I have to say I really do like it. If you have anymore good tips or know where I can find some definitely let me know. My email is [email protected].

Thanks again,

Kim

I recently migrated to the MDA from the SK2 myself. It took a lot of adjustment, but now I don't know how I got by without it!
