I've been trying out a couple of apps to help me organize my documents (mostly meeting notes and event logs). But, I keep bouncing back and forth between PhatNotes Pro and DayNotez because there are things I really like about each.

Which would you recommend?

My priorities are (in no particular order):

-Creates rich text documents
-Seamless desktop sync
-Customized filters and searches
-Customized categories, preferrably color-coded on screen
-User-defined templates a plus
-Intuitive use (I never won any awards for being too bright)

If you use Pocket Informant its hands down Phat Notes.

PI is fully integrated to PhatNotes . What this brings is the ability to link notes to contacts, task and/or meetings/appts with full journaling, categorization etc. You can sort by category, assign multiple categories etc. It also syncs to your desktop and is available there through Outlook Notes.

Get the trial of PI and try it out with Phatnotes, I think it will fill all your requirements.

I bought both (PhatNotes back when it was HPCNotes, and DayNotez as a sidegrade to my Palm version).

I use PhatNotes for a general repository of information, notes, etc., that is usually grouped according to category or something along those lines.

DayNotez is more temporal in that I use it to jot down progress of things on a particular day, etc. It's more of a journal of activity (eg. spent 2 hours trying to figure out what was wrong when user stated he accidentally poured water on the laptop) rather than place to put general information about someone's network configuration (Bob's IP is x.x.x.x).

I don't know if that helps any, but that's how I use each (and how I view/utilize the strengths of each). So if the timeline is more important, than DayNotez is probably stronger. If organization according to another system of categorization is how you do things, then maybe PhatNotes.

Hey, great to see you around Brad!

I don't know if you use OneNote on your laptop, but it's by far the best note-taking application I've ever used on the PC and according to the latest news from Microsoft, they are preparing a Windows Mobile version with their next release of Office (scheduled for Q3 of this year).

I too use PhatNotes Pro and it still gets used quite a bit, but I anticipate that if MS OneNote Mobile is rich enough, I'll finally be able to consolidate my notetaking!

Either of you use Phat Notes tied back with PocketInformant?

When you add in PI's journaling, categorization, a today screen like Diary, etc you have something very powerful in your hand - still tied back to your desktop as well.

Hey, great to see you around Brad!
Thanks for the kind words! I miss all of the Thoughts team.

Thanks for the advice, too, everybody. I don't use PI, but based on the comments, it might be worthwhile to invest in both PI and PhatNotes.

I've never gotten into that "tie everything together" mentality. I suppose it works for some people, but I found myself spending more time linking everything together and then tweaking than I would if I just left everything to its own program. (I had the same mentality on the Palm and never got the hang of those hacks which seemed really cool that allowed linking from anything to anything else.)

Oh, for me that goes without saying. I refuse to buy any applications that do not provide full-function demos (time-limited ones, of course, are fine).

Wasn't Office delayed until next year to coincide with the delayed Vista release?

Yes, Office 2007 has been pushed back to January 2007.
