(NEC LCD Technologies) today announced that it will begin shipping samples of its new 3.5-inch (8.9-centimeters-diagonal) amorphous silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD), part number NL2432HC22-40A, in the beginning of June. The new LCD is extremely suitable for installation in various portable devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and portable GPS terminals as it can reproduce colors clearly and vividly even in indoor/outdoor environments with high ambient light. By optimization of its optical design, the new LCD achieves the highest level of luminance and reflective ratio in the category of semi-transmissive LCDs with a high luminance of 220cd/m2 and a high reflective ratio of 15%."

I believe the brightness and clarity of a display plays a huge part in the overall satisfaction derived from a Pocket PC. NEC's new 3.5" TFT-LCD boasts an extremely high luminance and high reflective ratio, yet still manages to maintain a power consumption level similar to that of standard displays. The company neglected to mention what the resolution of their LCD was, though you know what they say? A picture tells a thousand words, so use the image above to make an educated guess. :)

Edit: A specifications sheet can be found here - the TFT-LCD has a resolution of 240 x 320, and is capable of displaying 262K colours.

Question...

If they make this, (or a VGA version of this) and if it had the same connector ports as our iPAQs, Axims, FS, etc etc, is it theoretically possible to swap our old LCD's out for these new ones?

I doubt it. LCDs, particularly LCD connectors, tend to be very application specific. Besides, you probably couldn't buy these individually.
