I'd like to finally upgrade my Jornada 568. I've considered getting a used x50v or waiting for one of those killer Dell sales and get a new x51v. While it's nice to get a new device, I've been wondering if the WM 5 would be worth it after hearing of some serious speed issues. I can wait for a good deal on either device, but just wondering if the x51v is worth it? Appreciate any tips.

I have an x50v and have had a good friend buy an x51v -- both are good devices, but I still prefer the x50v -- WM5 isn't where it needs to be just yet and there is still a fair amount of software incompatibility... Really depends on what you want... You can certainly get either one for a good price... check out aximsite...

I personally own an x50v but I bought mine on ebay used with all accessories for $289. After comparing it with the new x51v from Dell, yes you do get the warranty and some other nice accessories, I don't know if it's worth paying that much more for. just my opinion. I wouldn't mind having an x51v though, just see no need to upgrade.

For what it's worth, I've had no problems with WM5, nor with many of the programs I've run on it, and would heartily recommend the X51v over the X50v. More memory, more battery life, and updated OS.

Thanks for the replys. I'm kind of leaning toward an x50v at this point. Have the recent ROM upgrades for the x51v made any difference in performance?

I've heard great things about ROM A06. I wouldn't know, though, as my X51v works perfectly on A01. No need to mess with it. You'd have to ask somebody else for more details.

Wow, your really lucky. I was having so many problems with version A01.
But A06 is working just fine for me right now!

I really like the Axim X51v because of the 256 mb of memory and the flash ROM!!!! WM5 is pretty good, but with a few bugs. But if you don't card about those two big things, then you should get the X50v!

Well, 256 sounds very nice! I guess I really don't understand the Flash ROM issue and how that makes a difference.

For those who bumped up from a PPC2002 device, how is the speed? I guess I'm scared off by comments that some apps can take 10-20 seconds to load the first time after a soft reset. Is this true?

Flash ROM makes a BIG difference!!!! :D

Ok, say if you run out of battery totally, it's like doing a hard reset with the X50v. But if you have flash ROM, (X51v) it's just a soft reset.

I've never used a 2002 version, so i wouldn't know. But i've been using 2003 SE, and WM5 and they work just fine. The speed is just great! :D

I vote for the X51, because it's still supported by Dell. They won't be having any ROM updates for the X50 due to potential theft of the WM5 upgrade, and with all the issues that it had in the beginning, if I were buying a new device now I'd want one with support.

I have an upgraded X50 and I'm really happy with it, I'm just saying this is what I'd do if I was buying NOW.

:?:

I have an x50v running WM5 and am pretty happy with it. Got it second hand with accessories and it was certainly cheaper than buying a new x51v.

That said, if you can afford the x51v then I would probably go with that. As PetiteFlower and others have said, at least the x51 is still supported. On top of which 256 meg of memory would be pretty good and it is reported to have much better battery life than the x50 series.

Just my 2 cents worth...

I have an x50v....

Glad to know you finally got a device after the horrible ebay deal. Your sig still says your looking.

I kind of go back and forth, honestly. I guess the jury (aka. Mr. Wallet) is still out for me.
