Hey, I just got the ROM upgrade for WM2005 and I am trying to put it on my hp5555. Each time I try to start the upgrade process it disconnects my ipaq and looks like Activesync crashes or something. I'm using USB to try to sync the device.

I'm using activesync 4. Also, I have the update for the hp5555 that puts it up to 1.10.10.

Anyone have some ideas?

There is no Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the h5500 series. What you most likely have is an upgrade designed for another device, since all upgrades are localised to a single device and released by the OEM.

HP has only ever released Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrades for the hx2000 series, and soon, the hx4700 series.

Your iPAQ is probably disconnecting, and ActiveSync is probably crashing, because you're trying to force an upgrade which won't work.

Since when did the 5555 get a WM5 upgrade ROM from HP? Or are you trying to put on a generic WM5 ROM?

It's a generic update.

In that case you run the risk of turning your PDA into a nice expensive paperweight - ROMs usually have to be heavily modified to account for the hardware configuration of a particular PDA. It's like installing WinXP on the desktop, but using only the generic drivers and not drivers specific to your hardware (e.g. your 3D accelerator just became a generic 2D VGA card). There's also the danger of serious instability, as your hardware was not specifically designed for WM5, which as you may know features a drastic change in the memory model.

As a corrolary, there's no such thing as a "generic" update, they're all tailored to a specific device. Where did you get this one? I'd guess that unless you bought it from HP, it's probably one of the beta ROMs for the XDAs that are available on the net.

It's probably an x50v or XDA upgrade, if it's 'generic', since I'm translating generic to be "doesn't have a label" on it. There is no such thing as a "generic" anything for PDAs, since even within the same family there can be significant hardware changes that make one 'upgrade' ROM completely unsuitable for another... as the legions of people who've tried to downgrade x51's to x50 WM2003SE ROMs or hx2490/2790's using hx2410/2750 ROMs have discovered. :D
