The project apparently involves a mobile PC running Windows XP, according to a Web site about it. The company will discuss Origami for 'only 30 seconds' during its main press conference at the giant CeBIT trade show next week in Hanover, Germany... Microsoft partners Intel and Samsung Electronics will provide the most information to CeBIT attendees about Origami, since Microsoft has not designed any new hardware for the project."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/ekkie_engadget_origami.jpg" /><br /><br />So we thought we'd get the full scoop come March 2nd, but that obviously hasn't been the case. As many have conjectured, this does appear to be one-and-the-same as the Ultimate Mobile PC that Intel had touted (and is scheduled to introduce tomorrow at their Intel Developer's Forum in San Francisco) Stay tuned. We'll have more details soon!

At this point I have only one question about Origami: will VS .NET run on it? :devilboy:

Looks nice. However, I doubt it will be affordable. Any info at all on pricing yet? I bet it will cost a bazillion dollars (or around $1000 for that matter).

I still have my Newton Messagepad 2100 that I still use on a regular basis. The form factor was literally perfect. With the right enhancements such as color, WIFI (Which has been hacked.), a more refined OS it would have been godlike. I've been waiting for the return of this form factor for years. I want one now. NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW.

I'm good with a grand. I'd be good at a grand and a half as long as the specs are right. Remember. This is NOT a PDA. Its a Windows XP (Eventually Vista.) system.

Anything less than $1500, with any kind of decent specs, and it'll blow the competition out of the water. Apart from the DualCor (which has still not yet made an appearance), the rest are 2 grand and above.

That's one of the competitors I mentioned - at, what is it now, $1,800++? If the origami does run WinXP, and does come in at around $1k or lower, and does have decent specs, then it'll be a contender.

So? It'll still be way too expensive for most people. Good luck if you're one of the few it helps, though.

Exactly, and I'm one of those people. It would help having such a thing at work though, so I might consider. Point is, there are notebooks that aren't much more expesnive and are still good to work with.

What this device very well could be is the PDA's successor, being that the traditional Windows Mobile devices are being gobbled up by phone functionality. A very good PDA runs $500 maximum and thus this Oragami device will only draw my attention if it isn't too much more above that. A grand is pushing it for me...

After all, a $1000 laptop will play FPS games a little better than that little bugger could and it would be a little more difficult to steal. :)

$400-$500, it's a huge hit.
$500-$550, it's a hit.
$550-$700, a moderate/dissapointing seller.
$700+ total retail market failure.

If they are targeting the average consumer, then $550 or less. If they want enthusiasts $700 or less. If they want hard-core users or corporate, then $700+

I'm not interested above $650.

I dont think that it would be a "total failure" if its priced above $700. There are multitudious amount of people who want a cross of pocket pc,tablet pc and a laptop. I think this would bring significant changes in the handheld and PC(or lappy) market

Every picture looks different, some a lot more ugly than others.

If the device looks like the the picture at the start of this thread, then I'm definately getting one, assuming its under $1000.

From all that I have read, there is going to be released a whole family of devices, within that family is the Origami. There are going to be some of them that are just an email/internet browers device and other capable of running XP.

From now one guys we just have another category in the mobile world: UMPC

The whole mobile family would be: PPC, SP, HPC and UMPC.

While the Origami concept appeals to me, I wouldn't want to purchase a bleeding-edge device with less than two generations out of the gate. What compelling Pocket PCs will sustain us in the transition time through early Origami devices? Perhaps Pocket PC+GPS units?
