Hi Guys

As you guessed I am very new to the PPC world, hence so many questions.

What applications are available to run general maintenace tasks on my PPC?

I have an iPaq RX 1950 running WM5.

I read about something called Pocket Mechanic, but does this run on WM5?

Has anybosy any ideas?

Many thanks

GArry

as a ppc user of 3 years or so, the only maintenance I do is

Manually clean out files
Manually cear the Temp folder
Regularly scheduled, automatic backups
occasionally remove unused software.

I've never needed to use special tools to do these. But I do use PHM registry editor to occasionally make a tweak to system setup.

What sort of maintenance do you think you want to do?

I'm not sure whether Pocket Mechanic will work in WM5 - but I wouldn't really use any of its functions either. Since we're dealing mainly with flash memory, defragmentation is not terribly useful - no moving parts as in a regular hard drive, you see. You see a slight improvement in performance, but I don't think its worth the risk of file corruption, which most PPC defrag tools will invariably cause sooner or later. What would be good is a memory cleaner like MemMaid which clears out the internet cache and temp files, though as Steve points out you don't necessarily need a specialised software tool to do this.

Instead of Pocket Mechanic, I'd go for either SKTools or MemMaid. They're vastly superior to Pocket Mechanic as far as their capabilities are concerned. Please read http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=360617 for more info on them.

I consider a daily backup to an SD card part of my maintenance. 'Sprite Backup' http://tinyurl.com/d8p6o or 'SPB Backup' (WM5) for that task.

I too recommend you memmaid. I've been using this from my last 3 pocket pcs and it works great with all of them.
Highly recommeded
