One of the problems that I often have is forgetting that I've recorded notes. I used to use a freeware app that would watch a given directory and display an alert on the today screen when notes were present.

Too bad this product doesn't seem to have that. I can't remember what that app used to be called.

Wow, that's an awesome program! I'd love to know what it is once you recall its name!

UPDATED: The program you're looking for is.....AudioNote!

Good find. I thought the name sounded familiar.

How does this compare to Vito's Sound Explorer, which I currently use? I primarily use it for this purpose and I'm always playing with the file type and size settings and trying to figure out what will work best. This seems to be what I'd have bought if it were available back when I bought Sound Explorer.

Main question: can it be configuered so that I can use my device's record-button to record a message on the fly? Anything else like having to start an application, press whatever buttons to start recording ... is just not intuitive and leaves much to desire when comparing to a "normal" dicatphone. So far only WM's standard notetaking application can offer this, however this application is just not flexible enough for more advanced taking of voice notes (no pause, no space-saving recording formats ...)

I would love to see a simple, quick an easy solution that simply works by pushing the recording button!

Many apps support button-based recording - that is, exactly what you need. Please see the "One-button recording? " row in the comparison chart of my roundup of sound recorders for the Pocket PC (http://pocketpcmag.com/blogs/menneisyys/112005SoundRecorderApps.asp).

Not yet - just working on a kick-ass roundup of Pocket PC mailer applications. Will test this app too as soon as I have some free time.

Very cool.
Anyone tried it with WM5?

I'm not sure if I'm right here or are probably misunderstood: I think even if the application supports one-button-recording, you still have to start an application first before you can one-button-rercord, right? Even if you manage to keep the sound-recording application running all the time, you still have to manually switch to this application (bring it to the foreground) to then be able to do a one-button-record. This is "two-keystrokes-then-one-button-redording". Real "One-button-recording" as I said is "power on - press button" thats it.

I would love to see an application other than the built in notetaking app to support this - ideally simply replace the built-in app. This would be really plain simple and straightforward.

What I want is simple:

Power on the PPC, press one button and recording starts (exactly as the built-in recording function) - just with lower file-size and ideally the chance to pause during recording.

You can do all this (I've described exactly this situation in my article) - with the exception that
1. you can't avoid bringing the sound recorder app in the foreground
2. starting the sound recorder application (by a button press) will be considerably slower than doing the same with Notes. This won't be an issue any more when it will be already started, just minimized, though.

Very nice program indeed! What is left to desire? Well, if I could only send my recorded notes via e-mail straight out of AudioNotes, this would be great: just record your thoughts & memos and send them on to co-workers, your secretary etc. Would make a great tool when on the road or when typing an e-mail is just not suitable. Shouldn't be to difficult to implement this into the application, right? So let's hope for the next update!
