Now I have a new problem with my rx1950. It won't turn on. It doesn't even appear to charge regardless of whether I use the wall charger or try to charge it off the USB (the charge light doesn't come on). I've tried hard and soft reboots and fiddled with it every way I can think of and I've gotten the boot up screen to come on twice, both times after I'd let it sit for a while (not charging) then take the battery out and put it back in. Then it tries to boot then blanks out. That's the only time I've been able to get any response out of it at all.
My best guess is that it has a bum battery that's not holding any charge. Does that sound about right? Is there something I'm missing or should be aware of?

Well, phoo...I just discovered that if I take the battery out and plug the iPAQ into the wall charger, it works just dandy...until I put the battery back in and the iPAQ goes dead the moment the battery touches its connectors.

It definitely sounds like a battery defect. If I were you, I'd contact HP and get it replaced.
On a side note, when you get around to spending some quality time with your device, you should install both of these updates:

The rx1950 is one of the victims of the infamous STD (Sleep to Death) bug, so applying these patches will help correct it, as well as add a few other tweaks here and there. Note, the first update linked above will force a hard-reset, so please backup your data first.

Confident that it was a battery issue, I took it back to the store I bought it from and exchanged it. The original one I'd bought had been a reduced price return so I figured I'd just pay the $15 difference and get one that had never been opened while I still could. It was a lot faster than dealing with HP, most likely. So now I have a working machine again and I've just installed the updates you suggested. Your input has been monumentally appreciated. I'm a complete newbie to these sorts of devices so the assistance I've found here has been invaluable.
