The beta version of the Opera Web browser (http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/) is by far the fastest Web browser for the Pocket PC. If you do need a decent Web browser and you have a Windows Mobile 5 device, consider getting it – you won't regret it, I'm sure :) Just download the CAB file from here (http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/), transfer it to your PDA and execute it there.

(Again, I only recommend this browser to WM5 users. I can't stress enough that you will inevitably run into annoying stalling/stopping problems under previous operating systems!)

Here're some new tips, tricks and bug/"hack" reports:

I've managed to get rid of the WM5 autocomplete crashes!

You may already have run into the following problem: when you try to enter something in the address bar of Opera, Opera immediately crashes and the operating system displays this error message (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaCrashingWM5.bmp.png).

I've noticed that this problem only happens with pages I've already visited. Therefore, it wasn't complicated to deduce the bug has something to do with the address auto-completion of Opera.

Yes! That was it!

To fix the problem, regularly go to Menu/Tools/Settings (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaMenuToolsSettings.bmp.png), go to the Advanced tab and click "Clear history" (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaClearHistory.bmp.png).

Alternatively, if you want completely get rid of the buggy autocomplete feature without having to regularly clear the history, edit the Max Global History Lines line (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaGlobalHistLines.png) in the \Application Data\Opera\opera.ini file. Change its value from 10 to 0, as can be seen here (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaGlobalHistLines-2.png).

File uploading does work in Opera – if you manually supply the full path of the file!

I've emphasized in my previous Opera reviews/tips (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=478&more=1) (also see the linked threads/reviews from the article!) that file uploading doesn't work because the "Choose" button (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaFileUpload-1.bmp.png) doesn't work so you can't just look around in the file system to choose the file to be uploaded.

I've done a bit of work to find what the problem was and found out that if you directly enter the file path into the file input field as can be seen here (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaFileUpload-2.bmp.png), uploading will work.

Don't forget to use quotation marks (") if the file path / filename contains spaces, as can be seen in the above screenshot!

As can be seen here (http://www.winmobiletech.com/kuvat/op0220/OperaFileUpload-3.bmp.png), the file upload is successful if you supply the full file path manually like so.

Modifying the default scrolling behaviour

If you want to enable one page at a time-scrolling (instead of the default, for D-pad users, really tiring and awkward one-link-at-a-time scrolling), please read the Opera section in this article (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=547&more=1).

New WM2003(SE)-related bug/hack reports

A user reported (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=120349&t=1140425004&page=5) http://www.europe.com/en/ frequently crashes Opera running on pre-WM5 devices. This is, unfortunately, true – just enter something in the "Search" text input field in the top left corner – the browser will just stall. It, of course, works just great under WM5.

Incidentally, some hacking: I tried to overwrite the WM2003 Opera's DLL and EXE files with those of WM5 to see whether the latter works on pre-WM5 devices (to get rid of the WM2003-related stalling bug). Unfortunately, they don't work. You'll need to wait for the Opera folks to get rid of the problem.
