Hi,
I've got a chance to pick up one of three very cheap PPC's. Even if I don't like it, it's not enough money to worry about so this'll even be good to test them out to see whether I want a better one.
Thing is, I don't know which is best. The three are below...
-Dell X5 (Not sure which. 400Mhz, 64 MB SDRAM)
-Dell X30 (Mid. 312Mhz, 64 MB)
-Toshiba e740
Which one would be best to go after out of these 3?
Thanks

Depends on what you want to do but, I'd go for more ram and higher Mhz. for a general purpose PPC that will do apps and play most games.
You do realize that whichever one you pick, you'll be locked out of most (if not all) new programs and games because these units use pocket pc 2002 OS.
Just my 2 cents...

Thanks man.
Yeah, I understand they're obsolete but I'm getting one so cheap that I'll just buy it to try it out before spending a heap of money on one.
Just wasn't sure which of those 3 was the latest or better one.

Well, the Toshiba is off the market for now. Apparently not interested in selling anymore.
So, since the X5 has more grunt, that would be the way to go I suppose.
Which is the later model. The X5 or the X30?

I believe the X30 is the newer model. If I recall correctly (and someone will correct me if I'm mistaken), some of the X5's had the PXA250 XScale processor which was a dog (Intel screwed up and to fix it, they slowed the memory bus down to 100MHz). The PXA255 fixed that problem, and I think might have made it into some of the later production runs of the X5. So if it's the older PXA250 processor, then it won't be much faster than the X30 running at 312MHz (if at all). Of course, doesn't the X5 have both SD and CF slots? I'm relatively certain the X30 was an SD only affair.
Choices, choices.
I used to have an iPAQ H3955 (WM2003) with the PXA250 processor (400MHz), and it was a dog. Even though my current iPAQ has a 400MHz processor (Samsung), it's tons faster because of the circuitry surrounding the processor and probably in part because of WM2003SE being better optimized (although there's really no way for me to back that up). But nonetheless, the PXA250 processor didn't work well for me.

X30 is newer, though are you sure it's not an X3? X3 is also newer then X5, but not as new as X30.
X5 - SD and CF, totally AWESOME battery life, very very large compared to most current PDA's. I put mine next to my new X50 and I'm amazed that I ever fit the X5 in my pocket!
X30 - SD only, smaller form factor, newer device, not sure what the battery life is like since I never used one but I know the actual size (maH) of the batter is smaller.
Toshiba - don't know much about it, but I think it's a pretty solid device. A friend of mine had a Toshiba at one point and liked it, but I'm not sure if it was the 740 or 750.
Oh, and Pocket PC's don't use SDRAM :)

ThanksUnless the X30 has WiFi, get the X5 or E-740. Those two have two slots. You can add Wifi and still add an SD card for more memory.

Thanks guys.
The X30 does have wireless and BT with it. Comes with a 512 MB SD card too.
The X5 comes with a dock, wireless card, 128 SD card and a spare battery.
Both for a similar price.
The extra's don't mean that much to me. Just after the better PPC and am not sure which one.
The X5 uses the X-Scale processor. Does that mean it's the PXA250 or was the X-Scale a PXA255 as well?

Get the x30 - it's the most up-to-date (WM2003SE) device. Forget the e740 - you'll learn to hate it (PPC2k2, buggy). I wouldn't recommend the x5 either (size, speed, WM2003 only).

Thanks.
I can pick up the X30 for $110 off a mate. The X5 is going for only $60.
I'm looking at this more so as a test to see if I really want to spend the $700+ AUD on a PPC.

The answer is obvious, X30. Not to mention the goodies you will get and updated OS(2003 SE)

Well, if the price difference is only $50, then, I'd go for the x30, especially of the x5 only has the PPC2k2 on it (otherwise, you'd end up having to purchase the WM2003 upgrade CD for it).

I agree, go for the X30 :)

Thanks guys.
I stuffed up. The X30 is going for $150. Is that worth it? Especially when the X5 is only $60 or should I just hang out and save up for a newer model all together?

Go for the new model - at this stage, with the age of the stuff you're looking at, you'll need to worry about battery life on top of the issues with the older OS.

x30 is worth $50 dollars over x5. It's a far better device as other stated.
