Welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts.

You'll want to download and install the Microsoft Device Emulator Preview first: http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/windowsmobile/downloads/emulatorpreview/default.aspx

Next, download the image of the OS you wish to test the software out on.

• Windows Mobile 2003 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=57265402-47a8-4ce4-9aa7-5fe85b95de72&DisplayLang=en)

• Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5c53e3b5-f2a2-47d7-a41d-825fd68ebb6c&DisplayLang=en)

• Windows Mobile 5.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=83a52af2-f524-4ec5-9155-717cbe5d25ed&DisplayLang=en)

• Windows Mobile 5.0 (Localised Images) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=eec33ae3-c129-4c25-abaa-18e8e842178f&DisplayLang=en)

And, that's about it. :)

I really need this emulator but when I go to the web page you mentioned it asks for "Guest ID".

My understanding is that these Guest ID's are issued by invitation only.

Am I wrong? Is there another way of getting the emulator? ... other than buying VS 2005?

Nope, the emulators are freely available, unlike VS - are you refering to the validation? You need to have a genuine Windows OS to be able to download any of this stuff.

The Guest ID is 'MSDEVICE' (case sensitive), as it says at the bottom of this page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/windowsmobile/downloads/emulatorpreview/default.aspx

I believe that for the v5.0 emulator you also need Visual Studio 2005 ..

Installation of the emulator can be performed without Visual Studio 2005. Unfortunately, it is the extraction of the images from the Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK that requires Visual Studio. There are MSI extraction tools available, but it's a messy process.

Thanks for the replies...

Just got the Windows Mobile Developer Kit in the mail yesterday. It's got everything you need to develop Mobile Apps and even comes with the 90 day trial of Visual Studio 2005 Professional which comes with the full emulator and lots of device profiles

It takes forever to install but I made a day of it and even made a couple of small apps with C# which I have never used before.

Thanks Microsoft!

Just curious about whether you have to be an experienced programmer to create a custom app for WM5? I would really like to create something like a form with "slots" for data entry on the job site, with some slots having drop-down multiple selections. Then I'd like to save it as a specific file name for later call-up.

Another guy on Aximsite suggested that I might be able to do what I want with Pocket Excel. At the end of the day, I'd like to be able to sync with my desktop and dump each file to the PC version of Word, Excel, or whatever so that anyone in our office can open it and print it when needed. It would be nice to "lock" that file so that once it's downloaded, it cannot be edited except by password.

This rocks the house!

It was kinda slow on my work machine, I will try it when I get home on a beefier unit.

This is a cool way to test software and do screenshots without much hassle or worry about screwing up your main machine.
